DubG1991 rated The Glass Staircase

DubG1991 rated a game 5 years ago
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

As a huge fan of PS1 survival horror, I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game! The atmosphere was pleasantly creepy and I could feel the love  of the genre the creators put into this game.

For everyone who says this game is an hour and a half long, I guess it could be if you play it perfectly. But that's like saying an NES platformer is only 30 minutes long. My experience was that it took me two sessions of roughly two hours to complete.

The game saves only by autosave and  it only does so a small handful of times in the game (five, I think). Three of those are at the beginning, before any  real combat starts.  Those last two legs of the game where you start fighting baddies, it felt like a LONG time between saves. I died  multiple times on each of those two legs before I got it right.

I feel like this was a deliberate choice on the part of the developer. A big idea in old PS1 titles like resident evil was to MAKE LOSING PAINFUL. I have to say, I was groaning at the screen when I died. Not because they were cheap deaths- I found the game balanced and fair.  I groaned because I knew how much progress I had just lost.

The upshot of this was that when I was nearing the end of these sections, I was on the edge of my seat plotting my every move. When I was fighting the final boss and my health was in Danger status and the last checkpoint felt like ages ago, it was genuinely TENSE. When I delivered the last shot that brought down any of this game's bosses, I literally  raised a fist and yelled "YES!" out loud. It felt damn good.

The only reason I reserve my fifth star is because I just wanted more. That's not a bad thing. For a small developer doing something like this without a major studio behind them, I am thoroughly impressed. I just loved it and hated for it to end. I feel like another hour worth of gameplay would have made it perfect. Guess I'll just have to look out for the next Puppet Combo survival horror gem.
