This game really makes the Gen 1 Pokemon visual/movement/interaction style work for itself. It's a tight experience, only allowing you to go to two fairly small areas that you will move between through the game's day cycles. There's some very cool pixel art "cutscenes" here, and some pretty heavy storytelling. There's also a good number of pretty solid music tracks here.
I think some people might choose to criticize the occasional tileset bug or typo for downsides to the game, but given how small the team was and how little they're asking people to pay I don't mind it. What I did take some issue with was some of the writing in the story. Some of the characters have very juvenile lines of dialogue, some terms that are less than favorable in the modern era. The writing bounces between feeling very topical, nuanced, and weighty and just goofy "funny" bits a 13 year old might say to their friends.
It's a 2 hour "Game Boy" game on itch, so I don't want to get too into the weeds. It did way more than I could have expected for a $3 game that lifts Pokemon's visual style, and ultimately I am glad I played it. It's an intriguing game both from a story perspective and a mechanical, nuts-and-bolts game engineering perspective.
