JordiGH rated Lizard

JordiGH rated a lizard 5 years ago
A downloadable lizard for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

This game is such a gem, and it pains me to know that it will never get the widespread appeal it deserves. Being thrown into a sprawling world of Brad's imagination, full of interesting creatures that are for the most part minding their own business and only react when provoked fills me with wonder.

I have played the whole game and I think I have found all or almost all of the secrets, and I'm very glad for the time I invested in this. Lizard is strangely philosophical, with some surrealist metafictional references to what it means to be a video game or what it's like to partake in a story, and those cryptic details made the experience that much more enjoyable for me. Why are we inside a lizard suit? What is this world we are in? Why can't we ever get out of the lizard suit? Is it just a suit or is it an actual live lizard we are wearing?

The almost exclusively passive interaction with the game world lets you come into the world of Lizard as an outsider, as if you were intruding into somewhere that you are not quite welcome in, but are merely tolerated. It is nice to not be able walk into a new world and immediately start killing everything in it. Instead, constant avoidance produces a very sort of gameplay.

Lizard is a large game, if you let it, or it's a small and short game if that's all you want it to be. It is, of course, "just" platforming, but platforming that lets you feel a story if you are open to it.
