Jackie Jackalope rated Seams and Senses (v1)

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Seams and Senses is a fantastically well-written visual and musical treat that uses its medium as a VN to its fullest.

The dialogue has a naturalistic style that I quite enjoyed, and the narration was delightfully raw and personal. Almost autobiographical and retrospective. These are characters with (what felt like) real histories, and I had to piece it all together. Enough knowledge to understand them, but not enough to know them.

It use of text was clever and playful. It used placement, size, and color to invoke emotions I don't even think our voices can. And its use of phones immersed me into Lim and Gloria's perspectives. I really liked the detail that each character texted to them differently, it added a lot. Oh! and how in Cherri's group chat I could scroll up and see the messages made before Lim joined. And that each person in it had a clear, distinct personality.

The art served the story well. The mix of cartoon-ish characters and realistic but dreamy, abstracted backdrops added to its theming. Its reality is strange, odd, and exaggerated, but by no means is it not reality as we know it.

The music was top notch, it matched each scene perfectly while keeping a core style. An electric-synth creature- chorus that was calm (but shaky), overwhelmed (but excited), or tense (but hopeful) whenever it needed to be.  I kindly ask for a proper OST release when the game is completed.

Overall, it was a satisfying experience, but I can't wait for the final version to come out!
