A middle of the road shock-horror game with some great UI, music, and sound design (which reminded me of Vangers, high praise.)
The story was fine, it depicted what it depicted, and didn't give much substance beyond shock. I think it could've done a lot better if there was a longer calm before the storm.
Maybe play through Kimmi and her child's morning, more build up to the rape with dashes of hope sprinkled in. That would've made the 2nd half of the game hit a lot harder, especially the reveal that the narrator was the POV of the wasp.
Speaking of, that was an aspect of the story I really liked. It was clever and subtle. A cool, insidious way of using second person narration.
Oh! The use of a real parasitic relationship to represent how a victim's trauma from rape can turn them into a rapist themselves was also cool. The loading screens were a nice touch too.
Overall, I enjoyed Clutch & Release. I think some restraint would have done it good; it bordered on comically vile and lacked contrast. However, its art and sound were of high quality, and its theme was on point. I look forward to whatever Hertz and 1ofyourfrenchbeans works on next!
