It feels more like a technical curiosity than a finished experience. While it captures the mechanical responsiveness expected of the genre such as boasting tight, lag-free movement and functional focus modes, it stumbles significantly in its presentation. The game relies on a peculiar coin-op-style entry system on PC that adds unnecessary friction to the startup process, and the lack of controller support makes the experience feel strictly tethered to the keyboard, which may frustrate those used to standard danmaku setups.
Visually, the game is a mixed bag of impressive atmosphere and unfinished voids. The title screen is a high point, featuring a beautifully rendered autumn tree and falling leaves against a scrolling sky, but this level of detail doesn't carry over into the main gameplay. Players will find themselves flying through a repetitive watery void that lacks the environmental variety typical of the franchise. Furthermore, the HUD is comprised of plain debugger-style text on a simple gradient, which, combined with a non-functional progress bar, gives the impression of a project that is still very much in its infancy.
The most jarring aspect for fans will be the total departure from Gensokyo's established lore and cast. Rather than featuring Reimu or Marisa, you play as a generic maid fighting demons in a narrative vacuum. There is no dialogue, character banter, and the enemy patterns quickly become a chaotic, repetitive mess that lacks the rhythmic spell card logic of the source material. While the core engine shows some technical promise and the 16-bit sprites are drawn with care, the current version is a legend without a story that struggles to justify its place among the vast sea of superior Touhou Project fanworks.
