Initially I was a bit skeptical that you were playing as a boy instead of a girl as in Horse Hall, but the game ended up gaving me everything I wanted anyway:
A slightly trashy, soft, fun but not shallow adventure in semi wish fulfillment magical high school. It feels like the game really doesn't care about being respected, like it took a few levels in artistic chaddery, which is partially what allows it to be fun.
After finishing the game, subjectively, it felt like it was impossible for someone to spend a couple of days with this game and not feel more cheerful. The game has its challenges, its punishments, its bad ends, but it feels devoid of negativity in its outlook. It's spiritually nourishing, not a three star Michelin course, but way above junk food. My soul is sated.
Some of the romance options do feel a bit too vanilla, but you still have edgy bad boy demon from the previous game, goth girl, goth girl with knife. I feel the roster could have been richer overall, but this is a matter of taste.
One of the game's strong points is the fact that unlike most VNs it actually has gameplay! While quite short, the game is reaaally wide - lots of routes and side routes to explore that don't diverge much in the main content but always have new interactions to enjoy. Besides the normal dialogue based choice and consequence, you get to actually cast spells in the dungeon exams. It's a wonderful freeform puzzle solving challenge. The multitude of possible solutions (and the fact that you might have picked such a sucky spell combination that you can't solve the dungeon) always makes you keep your eyes open and feel actually interested in the challenge. With a bit more diversity in the environment, it could have been exploited even more.
