First things first: this made for a super fun and remarkably emotional date night. It essentially became an excercise in saying heartfelt things about each other, buttressed by building a lively environment and community for our characters to inhabit. Asking each other "Do you yearn?" after every answer was not required, but was fun to do, too.
In the spirit of constructive feedback: there were a few things that stood out, though. Nothing that damaged our fun, nor anything that would decrease my rating of a playtest, but definitely worth discussing.
First and foremost: we were not entirely clear on how to construct the arc so that it was possible for just the book to fall, nor for one tower to collapse without taking the other down through the book's subsequent fall. We ended up going for a construction where the book rested on one tumbling block on either side, but this ended up giving the towers *more* stability, as the pressure held the blocks together. That was symbolically powerful, as this meant our still existing connection was the only thing that kept us functioning, but I'm not certain it was the intent.
Other things were smaller, such as not every prompt seeming equally applicable to both roles, and it not being clear from the start that the Knight's love for the Nun should be as much a secret as the reverse. That latter point did lead to some very fun moments, though, as my Knight was *not* subtle.
There were a few minor writing hiccups, causing me to stumble a little while reading. Foremost, the description of If both towers fall switches from 2nd to 3rd person halfway through, in the middle of a sentence. Hearts 5 also says 'reach' where it should be 'reaches.' These are honestly very minor and did not damage the experience, but as a writer myself I know the relief of having a mistake pointed out before the final version, so I couldn’t not mention it.
Finally, there was some confusion in terms of time period. I don’t think it's super relevant for gameplay, but while you mention that the real 1122 CE castle was only built in the same place as the original, and you mention Roland served Charlegmagne, putting him somewhere between 768 and 814 CE, you don’t mention that second timespan by year. I think a layperson could easily interpret the the text as meaning the game takes place in the early 12th century, making calling the intended setting "pre-medieval" potentially confusing. Also, not to be the pedantic History Major (he said pedantically); the late 8th century is also very much (early) medieval.
Honestly, though, really good job on this! My partner remarked several times how fun and clever your ideas were, and I'd happily play this game again!
