This game's probably always going to depress me. I was rather into it, and enjoyed providing bug reports and replications, but I tried suggesting the game text not mention manifest destiny, and the setting/scenario writer picked a weird transphobic fight with me by leaping immediately to "I bet you're offended there's only male and female gender options, too!" (which, I said in reply, I had noticed but had assumed up to that point was out of ignorance, not malice, but now was rethinking that.) Things broke down from there, as the other devs circled around him and demanded I apologize, without any consideration that all I had intended was to offer a suggestion about phrasing and in return got made as unwelcome as they could manage. Obviously both sides will tell the story differently, but this has been a painful memory for years for me. Odds are good the incident has been forgotten by everyone else, to be honest. I realize one must occasionally deal with hostility or differing viewpoints in FOSS, and that implicit politics in a game aren't necessarily something one should poke at or disturb. However, I was not the aggressor, so I think I'm not really the one who needed to learn that lesson here. It's been a lot of years now; perhaps things have changed. I wouldn't know. I just miss being able to play the game and contribute to its development, however mildly, without that day removing my enjoyment. For now, I'm done thinking about it. Do with this as you will.
