gorymess rated The Freak Circus

gorymess rated a game 76 days ago
A browser game made in HTML5.

Interesting game! I like the story behind the circus, though it seems strange now when you don't know the full picture (for example, how devouring another monster made them human? Or they haven't become human? They grew stronger after eating her or how they have changed?). Intriguing, I like it. Romance is also odd but cute, hahaha, at least I don't have questions here, it is believable that monsters won't have adequate romantic preferences.

We don't have a lot of different routes or options here, but it is understandable. (for example, we cannot trade Pierrot's ticket for Harlequin's when he offers his, though it may be curious to look at this scenario). On second thought...When you replay the game, you don't pay attention cause you can still develop relationship with Harlequin. Besides, there are a lot of interesting characters, actually all the monsters are interesting. The Doctor who is driven mad by blood, the Jester, the Ticket Taker all have their charm.

All in all, atmosphere of the game is unique, dark, oddly romantic, reminiscent of a grim legend.

UPD: The more I replay and get to know some extra info about characters on tumblr, the more I get addicted hahah. This is a piece of art, I like the idea of making art, not just an otome. I really believe in the future of visual novels as a format of storytelling...So keep doing what you are doing <3

Noticing all the little details is my goal now hahah, I discovered the trick with the names. Gosh, it makes me like the game even more - understanding that the creator did care this much, deepening the understanding of the characters. And the tragedy of the monsters' story is oh so beautiful! I can see the love for poetry here (which I can totally relate to).

Noticing the characters occurring in the background is also fun. Different hints scattered across the screen are also adorable. I am in my stage of pure admiration for this game, obviously, hahah.

To hell with everything I said before about limited routes, I don't mind cause this is not a product for consumption, rather a piece of art to dive into.

In the context of it being a piece of art, I'd share some thoughts on the characters. Actually, it is practically painful how beautiful and at the same time non-existent all of this story is. I don't know if the poetry can exist in real life, a lovesick like Pierrot or a person broken in the way Harlequin is.

(Sorry for my English, idk if everything sounds adequate).
