So at the time of this review I've played three routes: Elliot, Corvin, and Ewan. Honestly, the writing in this game is superb - I really like the plot and how it's addressed differently depending on what supernatural the boy you're aiming for is, I love both its adherence to the fae folklore that's out there as well as where it ignores it, I honestly really like how different the characters are. I've heartily recommended it to many people based entirely on the writing alone.
The art is hit or miss. The backgrounds are GORGEOUS. I don't know if they're paint overs or anything - that may contribute to it, but they're lovely, all the same. The characters aren't great. They've got similar-face-syndrome, and I do wish the boys were a little more obviously monster-y, and I wish the expressions were a bit more vibrant. But I'll be real, I don't play VNs for the art, I do it for the story.
My only real complaint about the story is that by the third playthrough I was a little annoyed at the heroine because of how whiny she was about supernatural stuff - but honestly, so long as she was being sarcastic or grumpy or snappy, I was fine. It was mostly when she went into internal monologue for what felt like forever that I was annoyed. Ewan's was my third playthrough, and my annoyance at this really came to a head (I'm going to try and be vague with this) at the end of his route where something spoilery happened again and again and EACH TIME IT HAPPENED even though it was the SAME THING she would proceed to angst about it for WAY TOO LONG. I contribute my extreme annoyance to this, though, being because I played it three times rapidly in a row. Like, I like angst, but there's a point where I'm done with it, and by my third playthrough I'd clearly hit my limit lol The first I never got there and loved every bit.
But over all, this is one of the best VNs I've played in a long while. I heartily recommend it - I just recommend having a palate cleanser if too much angst grates against you!
