klinscy rated Anomaly: Containment Breach

klinscy rated a game 5 years ago
A downloadable game.

I'd just like to start by saying I absolutely love playing nearly-mechanics-less storytelling games with my friends, but this game especially has a two great things going for it just off the top of my head.

First, this game's choice of overall archetype does a great job of driving home the particular inspiration settings it emulates.

I think the collaborative story-building part of this game really fits the kind of free-form, spooky narrative feeling that most SCP articles have. It really helps the Magnus Archives and the SCP Foundation inspiration really shine through here in a way that I haven't seen emulated in video games or TTRPG's.

Second, this game's tarot mechanic and its turn format of actions, projects, and characters does a great job of driving the story. The Tarot deck really was a stroke of genius in my opinion. First, aesthetically, drawing fortune telling cards to determine how an anomaly is going to interact with the world is super fitting, and helps to make you get into that supernatural mindset. All the questions asked by the tarot and the turn actions feel meaningful and fun, and, none of them feel like they're boring or repeats.

Overall this game is great and I urge people who love the inspiration of this setting to try it with their like-minded friends, and a great way to write an original SCP in a very organic way.
