GravelYaps rated A Mortician's Tale

A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

Non-Spoiler Review:

PROS:

  • Simplistic controls and gameplay
  • Atmospheric
  • Deep themes and meaning
  • Gets you thinking about topics and industries you probably have never thought about
  • Short and sweet! (Took me an hour to play through)

NEUTRAL:

  • A one-time experience game (not replayable)
  • Lots of reading, nothing is voice-acted and all storytelling is done through emails and dialogue boxes
  • Music was fitting and atmospheric, but didn't blow me away

If you are considering playing this game, I highly recommend it, especially considering that it is not a massive time commitment. If you like short but thematically deep games that will make you think, you'll like A Mortician's Tale.

(Spoilers Below!) Specific Thoughts/Ramblings:

  • The moment that stuck with me is the homeless man's funeral. Every other funeral you do is full of people talking, crying, reminiscing about the deceased, and yet when you cremate the unclaimed body- it's only you. Something about placing the urn out there and paying your respects despite nobody attending...

  • I loved the inclusions of the eco-friendly burial methods, as well as the themes of corporate greed. I had never thought of "the death industry" so-to-speak, and this game has piqued my interest!

  • I'm so happy of the inclusion of that one newsletter email about respecting trans/genderqueer individuals in death. A very important discussion, and one that hits close to home (I'm a trans man).
