Free, fun and has a short learning curve as well as low resource requirement/footprint -it's cross-platform too. The scripting environment uses syntax similar to Python, but there's also a Mono version with C# support and with GDNative can capitalize on C++ and C. Godot covers a great deal of ground and is under 100MB (without tutorial/starter projects).
