Marvellyous rated The World Begins With You

A downloadable game for Windows and macOS.

Given this was made under limited time, I would say this game is ok. It looks decent, and while the puzzles aren't anything new they work fine. It's a bit janky, and while I like the ambition of the camera angles for adding to the atmosphere, sometimes it makes the platforming frustrating. I am however willing to give it a bit of slack for being part of a game jam, as I expect these sorts of issues to arise from games which are made in such a short time.

However, even taking that into account I am ultimately disappointed in the game as it's not particularly interesting or fun. There's not much gameplay-wise that's particularly innovative or engaging, and while there is some storytelling happening, both enviromental and the things the MC says and reads, there's not really anything of substance that would hook me into caring about them or the world they're in. It feels like information is deliberately held back in order to interest the player and get them to try and fill in the blanks themselves, but I feel like too much has been held back and so there's not really anything for me to start theorising with. In that aspect it feels incomplete, like the game was leading up to something more but had to be quickly wrapped up (which makes sense for a game made on a time limit tbh). Whatever the case, I hope that the game has been a good learning experience for the dev, as I think there is potential here and maybe the idea which resulted in this game will lead to a more fleshed out and interesting future game
