Pink Narcissus rated Falling For Al

A browser game made in HTML5.

A delightful comedy-with-social-commentary game!

The creator's quest of showcasing as many of the game jam's sprites the game is part as possible is commendable, and resulted in a fun introduction to the main character's disastrous (attempts) of a dating life. The jokes continue throughout, and pretty much all of them landed for me. Visuals and music are a huge part of the comedy aspect and used to great effect. And in the visual department in general, the main menu is particularly well made.

There's a bit of a surreal atmosphere throughout, a lot of it poking fun at whatever 'created' - or perhaps generated from blind guesses is more apt - by AI ends up being uncanny. There's some framing of scenes that have jank to it, like a frontal facing sprite being shown in the inside of a car drawn in a 2/3 view, I can't even tell if it IS jank or part of the joke. I choose to believe they're part of the joke.

The social commentary on AI runs throughout. There is the obvious (and correct) message of how it's being being pushed into our lives. But there is also the more concerning aspect of parasocial dependency on something that isn't real here too. It's even subverted in a way that dances into horror territory if I think too much about it, but I'd rather not spoil that part.

Even though the creator decided to withdraw from the voting process of the jam, I encourage people to not miss out on this fun, and casually thought-provoking, game!
