Cardigan rated Bloodsuckers

Cardigan rated a game 1 year ago
A browser game made in HTML5.

I can summarize my experience with Bloodsuckers in a single sentence: “good ideas, lacking execution.” No part of it is poor, but I found many of its creative choices attached to caveats. Taking these aspects together, it leaves the VN wanting in many areas.

Bloodsuckers’ central concept is a creative spin on the vampire formula where they take in the literal memories of their victims. What that means is that most of the VN's experience is going through these memories and my issue with this is twofold.

First, and most obvious, the sequences feature uneven and strange format, structure and punctuation done (I assume, intentionally) to recreate the stream-of-consciousness format memories and thought can take. On paper, this is a great idea that performs its effect pretty well. In practice, I had a difficult time discerning speakers, characters’ intentions and even actions taking place. It made my time with it fraught with quick but frequent re-reads.

My second problem is tied to the grander structure of the piece. See, these vignettes (and due to briefness, I may even call the moments outside the memories a vignette) are all well made on their own and have something interesting to them, but I struggle to make sense of what they together say about... anything, really. I got a lot out of the terse dialogue sequence at the end, while the rest of the story doesn't seem to coalesce into a point of its own or strengthen that conclusion. I came out of the experience thinking “Damn, that's crazy.” and little else.

As I said from the top, there are good ideas here that either due to brevity or creative choice, cannot make full use of their potential. It's far from bad, however, and it's worth what a little time it asks of you. I just wish it was a little better.
