ani mosity rated Monstrous Liberation

ani mosity rated a game 1 year ago
A downloadable game for Windows, Linux, and Android.

This game rules. The art is great, the writing is TREMENDOUS, and there are a number of artistic flourishes on how narration and dialogue are presented and formatted that make this an excellent and obviously thoughtful game.

I really love the code-switching with tone that happens between high-faluting magical and Rennaissance-ish dialogue/narration and more straightforward, plain explanations of Sasha's inner state; it reminds me of the funniest parts of The Lord of the Rings.

It's also super hot, and Sasha's clear delight in having new sexual experiences and getting to fuck assorted non-humans in a way that feels a lot more nuanced and, honestly, respectful? Than lots of porn games with non-human characters, is really nice. Sasha doesn't feel like a flat character for players to project onto, but she still feels really relatable and enjoyable to watch having sex with the other characters.

I was also so excited to see post-Liberation scenes between characters, to get a sense of how they relate to each other and interact! I love it when games show more of the world and how the NPCs exist in it, and getting snapshots of how each character not only works for the Resistance but how they relate to each other is so so excellent.

It's really impressive and feels obvious in hindsight how much even very simple animation adds to the dynamic feeling of scenes. They get a lot of mileage out of essentially two frames of animation, alternating with each text box, so the pacing feels natural with the advancement of text while also feeling much more immediate than a static image, without being nearly as jarring as sudden animation. It also, of course, helps clarify exactly what's going on, which is sometimes difficult to determine in erotic content, especially with non-human participants who may not be acting within a viewer's frame of reference. This is a personal preference, but I happen to enjoy this solution far more than x-ray shots.

I went through all the currently-released story content in one sitting (staying up too late lol), and I am eagerly awaiting more! I would be totally satisfied if the straight-forward "get to know monsters, recruit them, fuck them somewhere along the way" mechanic was all there was to the story because it's so well-done, but the hints of more going on are sooo tantalizing also. And based on how strong the writing is and how developed the characters already feel, I am excited to see what else is going on beyond the surface!

I'm so glad I managed to figure out how to get this to run on Linux, although a short Readme file reminding people that they may need to run something other than the .exe file would not go amiss. I felt like a dingus when I realized I just needed to run the .sh file as a program, but apparently I rely more on prompting from Readme files and/or install instructions that I realized.

Rarely have I regretted a release-day impulse purchase LESS than I regret this one. What a fun, wonderful, exciting game!
