Player-LiT rated Flatwood Drop-Outs

Player-LiT rated a visual novel 1 year ago
A downloadable visual novel for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Wanted to give this 2.5 stars, but itch.io doesn't let you do that, so... 3 stars it is. It's not bad, but not particularly great either.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things to like: I think the main premise is interesting and Epura itself is a pretty intriguing concept. The story has some good hooks with a relatively unique take on the post-apocalyptic setting. The humor is really well done as well - the whole "VS Epura" segment, with Cooper and Lucas acting as TV hosts, was probably my favorite bit of the VN. I can compliment the art style as well - it's simple and not what most would consider 'professional', but it's really expressive and gives the novel it's own charm as well. It has personality is what I'm trying to say I suppose - especially the backgrounds!

That being said, the writing itself is probably the weakest link.  Things happen, the story moves, but it just didn't grab me - It all moved very fast and didn't have much impact at all - I never really got the chance to... feel it. The characters themselves aren't bad! Their interactions are plenty fun, but when it came time for me to experience anything but mild entertainment it kinda fell flat. And when 95% of the gameplay is reading... yeah.

I wish I was an actual critic who could articulate my points better and point out exactly what I did not enjoy, but alas. Or maybe it's just a matter of taste idk lmaoo

Also, I don't wanna kink-shame but... day 2 gave me a really big ick and I don't think I need to elaborate on which part it was.
