Decent premise for a roguelike, mostly enjoyable but for me started to get more annoying than fun the further I got. There's some promising stuff here, like the enemy designs, the focus on extracting resources over killing enemies, and I liked the secondary mission of defending the ship and the turrets I built at the same time, but it just didn't hook me enough to want to finish it when I lost my run. Likely this would be more fun for people who are less completionist then me, who know when to extract before they've collected everything, but I also think that the tactical aspect of the game is undermined by the combination of a slow increase in crew members (random chance of a planet spawning one), permadeath, and the relatively quick increase in planet difficulty. Technically you can buy more crew if you lose them, but you can only buy 1, and only when you're reduced to 1 crewmember, I honestly cannot imagine trying to continue the game in harder levels if you go down to 2 crew, I think at that point unless you're lucky enough to find another planet with a crew member and also find them quickly without running into much alien resistance, then it's basically a failed run at that point. A minor note is I would have liked it if the game had some form of tactical pausing; the ability to pause the game so you can look around the map and give your crewmember orders is a tactics game staple for a reason, and here it would have been especially nice given how even losing one crewmember or sometimes even just 1 turret can potentially spell doom and turn the tide of your entire run. I will say that sometimes there was some nice tension as I flicked rapidly back and forth between the crew and ship, so maybe there's something there in an alternative version of this game, but given how punishing permadeath is and how much resources turrets can take I would definitely prefer tactical pausing in this version.
I think in general this game just needs a bit more polish, a little more testing to refine the systems that it already has, and/or maybe to add some personality and identity to the game, perhaps in its aesthetic or story or atmosphere, to make players feel a bit more invested in carrying on with it and seeing more of the planets and enemies. It's not a game for me, but I think other people might enjoy it and I am interested to see what else Tentacle Head Games has in store.
