In comparison to Studio Investigrave's previous entries, this "game" feels much more akin to a Visual Novel with very little game play outside of the Map feature and general exploration. I, as a lover of VN's, don't mind this, but consider it quite contrasting to the progression of gameplay seen within their prior titles such as Dead Plate and Cold Front. This would be perfectly fine and align with my love for VN's if the story was a little more salient and less vague. While I find the symbolic meaning of the game a little underdone (the themes about friendship could have been better portrayed before all the weird shit started going down), it is the literal understanding of the strange happenings in the story that could really use some clarification, as THAT is what is going to hook your viewers through 40 mins of "gameplay". (I don't say that with any malice).
As usual, the art is delectable, a real treat on the eyes! And the short running animations for the characters are really cutesy and janky in the best way possible. The atmosphere is so well conveyed, Studio Investigrave really know how to emulate that feeling of dread!
A motif of some of their previous games is the use of eyes in a realistic style, clearly taken from photos and collaged onto the sprites in-game as seen in Eloquent Countenance and Dead Plate. I feel like this game really could have improved its atmosphere even more if this was included, the ominous references to the "she" seemingly lurking in the ocean could be punctuated with the eyes foreboding glares, which would help explain a little more of what the fuck is going on.
I reckon this game will be a dubious one within this little fandom that Investigrave have cultivated, and that's fine. This isn't a bad game by any means. It's not a home-run not a strike, more like a foul?
