Arcanum rated Monochrome Pixels

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

A very important game, especially in a time where so many game devs are being laid off and quarterly profits are prioritized over treating workers humanely.

The art was excellent. The color schemes of Enya and Diana added a nice contrast to show their differing personalities. I was really drawn to their eyes in particular - they perfectly convey Diana's weariness and Enya's cheerfulness. The backgrounds were great, too - it was fun to see all the little cameos of other games and, stylistically, the backgrounds worked great with the sprites. I loved the glitch effects and the CRT noise that reflected Diana's anxieties, while also representing a glitched/broken workplace relationship.

I loved the best ending, which had a really important message of empathy. Diana's connection and comradery with Enya allowed her to persevere. The mentorship ultimately benefitted both of them. It's the ideal of what a professional relationship should look like - encouraging each other to do better while remembering each other's humanity.

I also appreciated how Godric is a realistic portrayal of a toxic boss. He's primarily interested in lining his pockets, and his threats and veiled insults are used to assert his control over his disempowered employees. He takes advantage of people's fear of retaliation to push more work out of them, more crunch, skipping lunch. Unfortunately, people like that are all too common.

Truly, truly, a wonderful and very timely game. I only hope that real life devs can unite and heal like Diana and Enya do in the best ending.
