I really enjoyed the previous game, Once In A Lifetime, and Eternum is exploring an even more interesting mystery so far, at least to me. Both games have their strengths, and I would easily recommend either of them to harem genre fans. They feel very fleshed out and well worth the time to experience.
A lot of care obviously went into creating both, but it especially shines in Eternum's more varied, fantastical settings, and the cast of characters in Eternum feels even more varied and interesting than the already great ones from Once In A Lifetime.
Going into it, I thought there would be more references and returning characters from the previous title, but for the most part it's a stand-alone story, which is probably for the best. The few nods and references I have picked up on have been very amusing, particularly the mention of the former president, and repeated lines of dialog from the earlier title.
Personally, I could do without the horror sections (of either game) because I don't enjoy those kinds of things, but I know it's a popular genre, and I'm surely in the vocal minority there. And while even I can admit they were put together well and serve their intended purpose admirably, I appreciate that they don't overstay their welcome and are just smaller segments, rather than the main focus in the overall story.
I appreciate the inclusion of the walkthrough guide too, because while some choice outcomes are obvious, at other times the correct path to follow requires a succession of careful choices, not all of which are intuitive. Both Once In A Lifetime and Eternum would be very challenging games to navigate perfectly without a guide, even for experienced VN players, and while I'm sure some people enjoy that challenge, it's helpful having the guide available for those who prefer a more relaxing, straightforward approach to playing the game.
Regardless, if you liked Once In A Lifetime, you'll probably like Eternum too. If you haven't played either, you might want to start with Once In A Lifetime and then check out Eternum after that, since Eternum takes place at a later time period, and there is some continuity between the two.
