Nick Vaccaro rated Flux Caves

A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I only played the trial, but I really enjoyed the game. I plan on coming back to purchase the full thing in the future. It is a great base game, and has a lot of potential for future puzzles and improvements.

Pros:

  1. Difficulty Curve - I think the difficulty curve is perfect as-is. The introduction of the first open-world puzzle was phenomenal, and reminded me a lot of The Witness. I first encountered it, looked around, had no idea how to solve it, and left. Then the very next puzzle I ran into taught me how to solve the open world puzzle. I then immediately went back and solved the open world puzzle.
  2. Relaxing Atmosphere - The music really helped to sell the relaxing atmosphere. I never felt rushed and didn't feel as though any monsters were going to jump out at any point. It let me really focus on the puzzles.
  3. Quick to get around - I was really happy with the speed increase while holding in shift. It seemed more than 2x, maybe 3x? Either way I never had an issue going from place to place.

Cons/Improvement Ideas:

  1. Push Blocks from Elevation - I wish I could push the blocks while being elevated. On more than one occasion, I was standing next to a block that I wanted to push, but was on top of a second block. The two were touching each other. I was not able to push the block that I wanted to push. The right-click undo helped a few times, but I also had to reset the entire puzzle at one point which frustrated me.
  2. Unnecessary Openness - In the open world area, I was able to swim but nothing came of it, I just ran into an invisible wall about halfway into the river. I'm not sure if future puzzles utilize swimming, but if they don't then I think swimming should be removed completely. Otherwise it just gives me, as a player, the idea that swimming is important when really it isn't.
  3. Graphical Issues - There seemed to be a lot of noticeable LOD issues. I saw all kinds of things popping in and out, including grass, trees, and even wall textures inside the puzzle rooms. I had graphics set to high. I realize this is an early build and this may be improved upon in the future.

Overall, a really well-done game! I would recommend it for all puzzle enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy sokobans.
