Woah, I really, REALLY liked it. I'm writing this review right after I finished it, so I'm still under the impressions.
Although, to be honest, I think maybe my real, honest rating for this KN would be 4.7 or so. These lost points are a bit silly and it's just my personal preference. It's not a big deal, but this is what the lost points are about:
I actually liked that Tavi realized his feelings only after Yuel kissed him. That would feel quite realistic, considering they are cousins and Tavi, being the older relative, was taking care of Yuel who was hurting. But, I just wish there were more... glimpses/hints? For us to see, that Tavi's feelings were shifting towards romantic rather than familial love, even with Tavi himself not realizing it.
Personally, the shift in Tavi's feelings after the kiss felt too abrupt for me. We do see that Tavi is more affectionate and touchy with Yuel than he was towards his former "partners" (or rather, one night stands), but we also know that they are cousins. We don't know if this is unusual behavior for Tavi when he's with his other cousins, rather, it just feels like Tavi would be like this towards his family in general.
He was also zero affected by finding out that Yuel masturbated in his bathroom, which only made it look more as if Tavi didn't see him at all in that light.
We do get to see a rather intimate moment just seconds before Yuel kisses him (when Tavi holds him), and there you can kinda feel like his feelings might be shifting. But then, the kiss happens and then the big shift afterwards. While reading it, I honestly expected that Tavi would reject Yuel after the kiss, then in the days that follow, after becoming aware of Yuel's feelings, his feelings might start to shift bit by bit and he starts looking at Yuel differently until he finally realizes he feels more than familial love.
It just felt like Tavi was the kind of person who is normally affectionate with family, but distant with his sex partners. We had nothing to compare with his feelings and behavior towards Yuel, except his past affairs, but you can hardly compare relationship with sex partners and relatives.
Also, Tavi is caring and affectionate towards Yuel from the very beginning of the story. It's not that he slowly, as they lived together, became more and more affectionate. He says, at some point, that he's always had a soft spot for Yuel, so I thought maybe it'll turn out that he's had feelings for Yuel since they were kids. It would've made sense why Tavi was affectionate towards the very beginning and it remained consistent, with no changes until the kiss, as he might have been, perhaps, hiding his feelings and trying to remain just an older cousin. But yeah, that wasn't the case in the game.
I probably didn't explain this well, but my point is: the shift in his feelings right after the kiss felt too abrupt. I wish there were some indications that his feelings weren't so familial before the kiss happened, or maybe that the shift happened slowly after the kiss. Or, since his affection was constant from beginning until the kiss, that there was a plot twist where he confesses that he's had feelings for Yuel even before that night at the diner, when Yuel called him.
I elaborated a lot on this, but again, these are just few points. I'm still gonna give it 5 stars, as I really loved the novel.
Their interactions were super fun! I absolutely loved the dialogues and all their bantering. Their relationship is the sweetest!
And I think I'm absolutely in love with dev's writing. I finished another BL kinetic novel (LoToTo) they made and, despite it being quite short, I immediately loved it. As much as I loved Unluckily in Love.
Since I only read gay stories, really, I hope dev makes more BL kinetic novels. I love dev's writing so, so much that I think, whatever story they write, doesn't matter the genre or themes it contains (but hopefully all with happy endings!), I'm gonna love it.
