Celianna rated Prank Masters – Otome Game

Celianna rated a visual novel 7 years ago
A downloadable visual novel for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Prank Masters is a cute otome that I'm sure people still in their teens would like. It's polished, the art style is simple and cute, sound effects are sprinkled throughout nicely, Julie the MC is great, and there are a bunch of CGs to collect.

I guess I was expecting more from the story and romance. Prank Masters is still just a high school otome, falling prey to the typical scenarios such as being the new girl at school, forcing the player to sit through many scenes about boring school work, and basically 90% of the game is set in school.

As someone who's nearing 30 years old, where high school was something well over a decade ago, I just couldn't get into it. I was very bored the first half of the game, because it was setting up that Julie is new at school, talking a lot to Katrina, going to her classes. Sometimes she'd pull a prank, and it's not like there were many.

At one point the parents start arguing about Julie and her pranking ways (I'm on Kadin's route). This is where the story finally picks up. No more boring high school stuff – instead we get a married couple who are fighting due to the protagonist's actions. That's good drama. The way Julie helps out her parents by getting them to eat at the restaurant is pretty cute.

But then she never comes clean to her parents that she was indeed, pranking, and it wasn't their imagination. That left a sour taste in my mouth; Julie learned nothing about being honest. Not in Kadin's route anyway.

As for Kadin himself, he's a sweet boy. I like the gentle, friendly types – so I won't be forcing myself to play through Romeo or Richard, especially since I don't want to read more boring class assignment stuff. But he suffers from childhood friend trope and non-true route trope.

Kadin already has a crush on Julie, which is great! I love it when people are already pining for years. But what exactly does Kadin want to do with his life, what's his motivation? If you take away his infatuation with Julie – exactly what makes Kadin, Kadin? He was a little hallow like that, because we didn't get to see him do things that weren't part of helping Julie and her pranks.

Giving him hemophilia does not count as character development, by the way. In fact, the entire reveal was a little lackluster because despite you hinting at it – it wasn't a big deal. It doesn't impact anything, it's just "Oh hey I have hemophilia," and "Okay, cool."

As for Julie, I didn't buy it. So, you wrote Kadin as the childhood friend who's already in love with her, but Julie only sees him as a friend. That can totally work. When Kadin confessed and Julie was pretty much ready to reject him because she only sees him platonically, I believed it. Because Julie has not shown any sort of interest in Kadin besides friendly intentions up until this point.

What was missing from that point on, is how Julie should have been struggling after being confronted by Kadin's feelings. She couldn't deny it anymore; Kadin wishes to be in a romantic relationship with her. This should have sparked the moment where Julie sees Kadin not as a friend, but as a romantic interest.

Sadly, that moment never came. You had Julie talk to Katrina and then she decided to give it a shot. Her feelings did a 180 and it wasn't believable how she'd tell Kadin "I like you, let's date." Because nothing was shown to us, the player, that Julie's feelings actually changed. We did not get to see her attraction to Kadin and in the end, it kind of felt like she pitied him.

All you needed were two more scenes with Kadin where Julie acted weird around him because she knew about his feelings. That's all that was needed.

Of course, Kadin wasn't Romeo, so plot points that would probably be solved in Romeo's route, were brought up in Kadin and then completely abandoned. Memory loss, and the small scene at the end. Yikes. This is why I hate true routes. Don't bring up plot points and brush them to the side.

Kadin's route also suffered from too much Katrina interaction. I understand they're twins, so it makes sense she shows up in his route a lot – but Kadin isn't even there most of the time. I personally do not like her, her psychic act was grating on my nerves. But then there were so many scenes with Julie and Katrina, just talking. These scenes would have been better spent on developing the relationship with Julie and Kadin instead. At some points I thought I had unlocked a secret yuri route.

It's not a bad game, I did enjoy some parts of it. But I've simply grown tired of high school otome (I should have just played the demo first, huh). I also expected a little more in-depth romance, but it was very light on the romance, actually.

I think people who are the same age as Julie would probably love this. But it's not for me.

Still, congrats on finishing an otome - it took a lot of effort and skill! It took me around 3 and a half hours to complete Kadin's route.
