Very engaging story.  Interesting characters.  As the spouse of a recovering alcoholic (32 years sober!), I'm learning more than I thought I would.

But some very unrealistic things pull the reader out of the story a bit too often.  Things like:

• junkie -> recovery -> police officer -> vice detective -> homicide detective in just a few years
• junkie -> recovery -> 2 half days a week job -> raise to $37 an hour -> promotion to manager -> prospect of becoming a business owner; all in just a few weeks
• no homeless junkies
• spotlessly clean apartments

But, I'm still learning and enjoying the story in spite of the unrealistic things.
