I first encountered this game on a late night GDQ stream where one of the devs was providing couch commentary. What I saw of the game then was enough to convince me to get it almost immediately, and it was one of my favorite games of that year. Coming back to it every so often, I still find it one of the most fun and engaging action-platfomers I've ever played. All of the mechanics - the unique checkpoint system, the combos, the scoring, the collectables, the achievements - are incredibly well integrated and bound together. All of the levels have memorable designs (the one with the lanterns is a personal favorite of mine), and the difficulty - while at times almost brutal - is all self-modulating through the aforementioned checkpoint system (where, if you're unaware, you determine when and where to place checkpoints, and are incentivized to push your luck).
I've gushed about enough, I think. I cannot recommend this game enough to fans of the genre or of horror aesthetics.
