Polyroll is a clear labor of love. It took what made sonic iconic and gave it it’s own spin on it. (Pun intended) The levels are clear and distinct, each world brings something new to the table, and hidden collectibles add so much to the experience, from the gems to the extra hearts. However on the topic of hearts; the HP system of this game is painful at best. When you respawn, you have a single HP, and have to collect gems in order to gain more HP. In difficult sections, where you’re actually prone to dying, there will likely be just enough to get 1 extra heart. So even if you get a higher maximum HP, it’s meaningless if you actually die, because you will always start off extremely squishy. Because of this low HP, many late game levels become precision platformers, which is not what the controls support. This leaves the early game nice and challenging, the boss fights tough, and then the late game agonizingly hard unless you take the time to farm HP in another level. That being said, it scratches that sonic itch and is a great window into what Sonic could have been like if it was created today.
