96 is one of the best horror stories I've ever experienced. The GameBoy style graphics are gorgeous (and unsettling when they need to be), alternating between impressive detail and intentional obfuscation. The music could change from barely-noticeable pleasant background noise to completely dominating the mood. Despite being purely interactive fiction, I felt tense throughout the whole game. The game begins macabre, then peels back the layers of the characters involved to make sense of the wounds , even if the harm can never be truly healed. I'd like to tell you there's a happy ending, but that's Another Story. To say more would be spoilers, but please, check it out. The game is only an hour or two of your time and horror doesn't get much better than this.
