Hey there! Right now, there are compatibility issues with A Short Hike and MacOS Catalina.

I'm working on a fix right now. However, there are workarounds outlined here for the moment:
https://itch.io/t/517191/macos-catalina-compatibility

I'll follow up with a concise workaround guide or a fix as soon as possible.

Thanks for your patience.

I've just uploaded a new build, called AShortHike_OSX_v14_Catalina_v2.zip

Would someone with a Catalina machine be kind enough to verify if this works?

Here are the instructions:

  1. Download and unzip the app.
  2. Right click on the app, and select Open.
  3. You'll see a warning dialogue that the developer is unverified (that's me!) and click Open from that dialogue.

I just downloaded this version and it is opening and running fine so far!

It is also working for me now too. So excited to play!

Works! I'm new to mac so sorry if dumb question - why does it ask for permission to monitor keyboard input even while using other apps?

Developer

Hmm, I don't use a Mac often either, so I'm not sure, but I imagine the game will run in the background if you minimize it or unfocus it, which may cause this permission.

Late 2013 15" Retina MBP working fine.

Just to verify, this version definitely works for me! I did have to do the 'right click and choose Open' twice though. The first time it recommended me moving it to the bin.

It worked perfectly on the second attempt thought!

I downloaded the newest file and it still will not open on Catalina even with all the tricks listed in other comments (Unarchiver, chmod +x). It only has a pop-up window saying that it can't be opened, nothing about the developer

Same here, just tried to open it after unzipping the file.

same here. here's a screenshot of the error i got.

Hey everyone. Sorry about this, I'm still figuring out this a bit. I created a new version, Catalina_v2, if anyone is willing to try it for me. (I don't have a Mac computer on hand atm)

Right click on the game icon and open "Get Info". I changed the sharing permissions to Read and Write and then I was able to open it.

Hi. I downloaded the game from the main link and it seems to work so far. I unzipped with The Unarchiver.  Running 10.15.5 on 2017 13" MBP on 2560x1440 setting on an external monitor.

I could not find the Catalina-specific download you mentioned.

The art consists of "coarse" (as opposed to fine) lines, no smoothing. Is that the intended effect? Switching resolutions doesn't seem to do much until I get closer to very low resolutions where things start to look fuzzy.

Thanks! looks like a beautiful game, can't wait to check it out more.

Hello! Yes, the pixellated effect is intended, although it can be changed in graphic settings under "pixel size"

Downloaded the Catalina version, launched perfectly. Thank you adamgryu!!

Downloaded the new version seems to be working fine. Thank you for your effort.

Hi I tried downloading the Mac version of this game but after unzipping the file it says that the application can't be opened.

In case you still need it, someone else posted:

Right click on the game icon and open "Get Info". I changed the sharing permissions to Read and Write and then I was able to open it.

The Catalina version is now working for me! Thanks so much for including your game in the bundle and quickly updating to fix :^)

I've tried both versions, the original gets an alert that says it can't be opened. V2 gets this:

“AShortHike” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.

macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware.

Chrome downloaded this file today at 19:51 from adamgryu.itch.io.

Right-click on the app and choose Open from the contextual menu, and it will prompt you to confirm that yes you really do want to open it. That is a security measure, I imagine, to avoid unintentionally opening suspicious software.

Developer

You need to right click on V2 and select Open from that menu. It will then let you bypass the verification.

Most recent version for Mac when downloaded and run on Catalina didn't give the developer verification error, instead said "the app can't be opened."

I checked inside the package contents and for some reason the main executable in Contents/MacOS/AShortHike was not marked as executable. After running chmod +x [path to executable] it ran fine.

This thread is from 10 days ago, but I just played for an hour on Catalina with the latest build, no issues. I install games from the Itch client and ran it through there, so there were no issues at all opening.

I just spent 2 hours hanging around in this game, and it's on Catalina. Loving it! No issues with the game, and I definitely will play it again :D

Just purchased and downloaded, receiving the message :

“AShortHike” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.

Running a Mac is OS Monterey. Anything I can do to fix?

Developer

Have you tried this?

I'm on Catalina 10.15.7 and when I try running it on either the itch client or by itself, the game would just take me to a black screen with the spinning wheel of death.  For context, I'm using the latest build file.
