Deleted Asset Packs

I have been using a art asset pack that had been released about a month ago and it recently had been deleted. The assets where free, but I donated because I thought they where very well done. I have been developing a game for about 4 months and recently learned about them being deleted and am concerned about commercial rights. In the description it said they where allowed to be used commericaly and without credit. Someone also had commented asking about the commercial rights and the owner replied he could use them in anything just not reselling the art. If you have any ideas on how this should be handled please let me know.

If you were granted commercial rights, and the person granting them had created the assets, you don't have a problem. Do you have a readme file in the download or do you remember the artist's name? You could see if he has other assets on itch.io and get his contact details from there.

If you're concerned that they were deleted due to copyright infringement i.e. the person uploading them had no rights to distribute them - you'd have to contact itch.io support with the details to see if they can help you - but you would need to know the name / package name or something that would help them identify it.

You could also do a reverse lookup: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/1325808?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&...

This will let you know if there is a source to the images you're using or where else they can be found on the internet.

Thank you for your reply Evolutuonary Games. The name of the user was Orlando Herrera and he seemed to delete all his art from his page. I know the art was all made by him and he gave permission in the description, just didn’t know if there was an issue since the art was free. I emailed him, but it seems he takes awhile to reply. I thought someone may have paid him to take them down so they can access them exclusively or he is using them in a game he is creating. Once again thank you for your reply.

I don't think you'll have a problem using those assets. His social media pages still point to itch.io and that would indicate that you got legitimate assets with legitimate usage rights.
