We Released Our Horse Racing Game… and It's Barely Getting Seen

Hey everyone,

The Final Furlong, a quirky, party-style horse racing game for 1–4 players. You deal cards, scratch horses, roll dice, and try to win the pot while the race unfolds in unpredictable ways. It’s a mix of chance, strategy, and tension—especially when the horse you bet on is suddenly scratched right before the finish line.

But here’s the honest part: We've launched it, shared it around, and... barely anyone has seen it. Just 25 views so far.

If you like games with friends, enjoy betting mechanics, or want to support weird little indie ideas—check it out and let me know what you think. Even a single download or comment means the world.

Thanks for reading, – Ded Hed studios

We've changed our game price to donate!!! So you can get it for free if you want to check it out. We appreciate everyone who at least gave it a look. It's not a blockbuster or anything like that but just a way for us to let the world know we're here and to keep your eyes on us.

Personally, if I saw this game shared somewhere I would not be interested because the title image is AI generated. I associate that with low quality (not saying your game is low quality, I haven’t played). Since that image is the thing that needs to get people hooked, I would spend some time creating a new one.

Thank you for the feedback. There has been a lot of debate over that image. None of the game assets are ai generated except that cover image and were in the process of creating a new one using 3d assets from the game itself.

I don't think horse racing, just as a general concept, is something you'll have an easy time selling. Personally I would not even play a free game about horse racing unless it had something -really- special in terms of gameplay... just rolling dice is not enough. In this game it also seems like there's no way for the player to influence the game or to interact with opponents, in which case it might as well be a slot machine.

The cover image is silly, but the background being your decapitated head logo makes no sense at all for the style of the game. Just having a logo like that is going to put off anyone looking for family-friendly content. You also tagged the game with "Animals"... yeah, probably not going to get many fans out of that tag, if you catch my meaning?

Good points. We appreciate the feedback and have to agree.

From first glance the main picture scared me. Definately needs a fix and not AI generated especially when you were asking for pay. This game can be good. A famous horse card game is pocket card jockey. It definately needs some QA before a full release. I noticed all the licensing you have for the game already. Though its good to have its quite fast for a game thats still early in development. QA is needed UI overlaps. Bugs, one bug i noticed was exiting the game into main menu still had the dice sound rolling. Tutorial has no "next" or "exit" its ends at previous. if you wish for me to do a full QA my discord is jennktv

What actual decisions can players make in this game? There is talk about strategy, but from the description the only thing a player might be able to do is bet. That's not exactly strategy. Neither poker, nor horse races nor dice games in general fall under the strategy genre.

Do not waste your tags on Indie and Unity. All games here are indie. And you have the made with Unity information. Also, this is not an action game. Neither is it a racing game. You do not simulate riding the horse. It is a gambling game, maybe a card game, maybe a dice game. And what is simulated is betting.

A thing that will discourage the actual download is your msi file. Installing is just not done anymore. It is so rare, that most people will be suspicious and not even know what a msi file is. Unzip and run it is.

To my observation it seems that mostly shovelware games use emojis in their descriptions.

Final Furlong: A Fond (and Slightly Embarrassed) Farewell

Posted by Ded Hed Studios

After a few months on itch.io, we've decided to officially close the stable doors on The Final Furlong.

We created The Final Furlong not because the world desperately needed a minimalist horse racing simulator, but because we needed to prove to ourselves that we could start, finish, and release a complete game. And in that regard, it crossed the finish line... even if it was limping sideways and missing a horseshoe.

Let's be honest:

The Final Furlong is not a good game.

It's rough, it's shallow, and it probably deserves a trophy for "Best Unintentional Tribute to 1980s Atari Misfires." We knew it wasn't our magnum opus going in, but that was never the point. The real victory was finishing the race.

Every studio needs a first pancake — the one that's a little lumpy, a little burnt, but proves you know how to turn the stove on.

The Final Furlong was ours.

Rather than quietly hiding it, we’re leaving it up as a reminder that success isn’t about starting perfect — it’s about starting at all. We've learned a ton, leveled up, and are now fully focused on projects that better reflect the creativity, passion, and ambition Ded Hed Studios is capable of.

Thanks to anyone who downloaded it, poked at it, and somehow refrained from demanding a refund for their free copy.

We’re just getting started.

See you at the next starting line.
