Why don't admins relay to whoever made them staff that we need an exclude tag option?

We keep getting recommended to use the, "?exclude=tg." to avoid seeing certain games but this does not work. I have read so many posts now where we get recommended to use these roundabout methods, but why take the time to search, find, and learn how to exclude games when it should be an option in the first place.

We either need a blacklist tag attached to our accounts or an exclude tag option next to the search bar.

It doesn't make sense how Itch hasn't implemented this while they have 1,020,000+ games; It's too much to search through, especially with the top games being flooded with horror, visual novels, or the same story LGBT games while you are not logged in. While I am at work I can't find a game to play unless I endlessly scroll past all those aforementioned games, which takes ~10 minutes of looking for any changes that day to the top games section.

I am not homophobic, but I have played 3 different gay, lgbt, lgbtqia games and was disappointed with their stories as they all had the same, "coming out" narrative.

I don't want to see any of those games until I feel like searching for a better story or unless I get an announcement of a new game off-site. For now I don't feel like playing visual novels and/or gay games, but can't exclude tags without using a roundabout method that doesn't work btw. Stop recommending us to add extensions to the url mods/admins. We can't exclude anything unless YOU implement it to your site. (which should have been done ages ago, itch is far behind. Newgrounds is old as dirt and has exclude tags, Gamejolt has exclude tags, Steam)

Did... did you read the countless topics where I explained that:

  1. Our admins have known about this feature request for years.
  2. They never said anything about any plans to implement more than the URL hack, or any reasons for the delay.

Do you really think that making the same angry demand for the hundredth time is going to help?

Thanks for the passive aggressive reply, but you have no reason to be upset than annoyed. I am making a post on top of hundreds because that's the point of presenting a underlying issue that has 0 excuse to not be implemented. The admins may know about this feature request, but if that were true I doubt they would just sit on this for years while endlessly throwing up game-jam calendars or whatever they do (I clearly don't know, because they don't do anything. They can host games but can't code a blacklist search parameter. Ridiculous.)

Instead of making replies, like you have for years because I recognize you, maybe you should compile these hundreds of posts and send them in an email to make the point across that it's simply too difficult for users to sift through over 1,000,000 games just by tags alone.

Hope your day gets better, as I can tell I got under your skin even though it's your job. -Moozly

Did ... did it occur to you that since this hasn't been implemented in years there might be a good reason?

You... are making a huge number of assumptions about the way things work here.

I got under your skin

You're making assumptions about me, too. What gets under my skin is people repeating this exact conversation year after year after year without thinking one second about these things I have to repeat every time. Always with the assumptions. Always with the demands. Always with disingenuous claims about "everyone else" having this feature when that claim is apparently misleading at best.

As if the rest of us didn't need it. As if the rest of us aren't wondering why it hasn't happened yet.

there might be a good reason

You do not need a good reason to not implement something.

It is the other way round. You need a good reason to implement something. Wishes of individual Itch users are not enough as a reason. There is a plethora of people that wish that Itch would accept crypto currency for example.

Once you have a good enough reason to think about implementing something you can list the obstacles. Usually time and money and structural problems.

But for this, the initial reason to implement it, should be really good, and not only because some people demand it very loudly. I have yet to see a use case where this feature would be benefitial - for all or many users. And acceptance of crypto currency would be benefitial for a lot of users that have trouble with regular payment services. A tangible benefit. Search with tag exclusion is a vague promise that you find your stuff better. Somehow. Someone needs to explain to me, how this would work. I tried this feature out on Steam and only ever used it for a theoretical comparison and not to find any new games.

tl;dr If there is not a good enough reason to implement it, you only need a weak reason to not implement it. The initial hack leafo made back in the day was dirt cheap and quick. That it never got a user interface or was expaned, but also not removed speaks volumes: It is enough to filter out horror and not so many people actually use it to justify expanding on it and it probably would be not so dirt cheap to fully implement it on this filter cross-section thingy that seems to happen with the urls.

But we shall see. This is community. Maybe someone does have a use case that convinces me. Or someone explains how you can do tag exclusion on all those other sites that are supposed to have it. There is obviously a need to talk about this. And if enough people see merit in that feature and request it with the feature request button, maybe it will be implemented in some way or another.

I would rather have it that they spend time to make the recommendations more prominent and better. There is a reason why I never even knew that Steam has this feature. I did not even know at first where to search by tags on that platform, let alone that you could hide them away.

but this does not work

It does. Just checked. The feature only works if you are logged into your account. And it is a browse feature. Not a search feature. I guess people use a bookmark to use the feature for their usual search.

We either need a blacklist tag attached to our accounts or an exclude tag option next to the search bar.

I agree that filtering some content account wise would be nice. Mostly "mature" stuff with more granularity like yes/no. Steam has like 4 or 5 of those filters.

And a user interface for existing features would also be nice, but unfortunately, this is an "inofficial" feature. Making it official would also be nice. We do not know the reasons, as for so many things. This is not something unusual. Itch does not talk a lot about reasoning why certain things are like they are.

or the same story LGBT games while you are not logged in. While I am at work I can't find a game to play unless I endlessly scroll past all those aforementioned games, which takes ~10 minutes of looking for any changes that day to the top games section.

For changes in the top games section, tag filtering is not a good solution. Especially for lgbt. There are like 10-20 different tags for this.

The thread below talks about what might help here, but such a feature is of course also missing, hence the thread.

https://itch.io/t/3477347/add-an-option-to-exclude-owned-games-when-searching

I made a client side solution. Basically you would press a key while hovering over each item you already checked out. After that, those items will be hidden and stay hidden. This is quite effective for a slowly changing list - and it can spoil your browsing habits, so turn it off once in a while. It is the tampermonkey script on my project page. Doing it in tampermonkey was inspired here https://itch.io/t/1018893/a-never-show-me-this-again-please-button

Newgrounds is old as dirt and has exclude tags, Gamejolt has exclude tags

Interesting. Where is their interface button for this?

https://gamejolt.com/games/tag-action

So how do I remove the horror games in that tag search?

https://www.newgrounds.com/search/conduct/games?tags=adventure

Same for newgrounds. How do I remove horror games from that tag search?

For people like me who play games at work to pass the 12 hour shift by, I can not download or do any rudementary methods besides blocking the adult content in my account and blocking 1 tag.

Please answer these questions:

How do I exclude on Newgrounds? How do I exclude on Gamejolt?

You claimed it is possible. I want to know how.

And can you or anyone else describe in a use case how multiple tag exclusion would be actual useful. Please.

Because, well, I have access to tools and ways to implement client side full multiple tag exclusion. It takes a minute to set up, but it works. But I just see no benefit in it. Convince me, that I can find my favorite game only by using multiple tag exclusion. Or at least, much faster. And also convince me, that I will not miss my future favorite game by having accidentally used a tag exclusion.

I do see a tremendous benefit in ticking games off, so you do not see them again. Like described here https://itch.io/t/1018893/a-never-show-me-this-again-please-button And this will be heaps better than ignoring tags. The first pages of popular do not change fast. Ticking off games takes a minute and they stay ticked off and will not clutter your browsing.

That is what I use, and it is very effective. Tag exclusion is nice on paper, but it is of questionable use when you consider how the games are tagged. It is the developers that do it, and they have different opinons about tags. So they might not tag the unwanted tag, or have the unwanted tag, but the content does not qualify for the tag in your opinion.
