For starters Ive been working in the game industry, mainly on the creative side of things - doing game art, animation, visual effects, design and currently working on player experience. I had recently picked up 3D as a medium that I wanted to master for game development, and it has been a ton of fun working on a variety of projects.

In between personal projects, I work with other game developers to make games for ludum dare or prototypes. Now I run a garage development at the game asset section of itchio filling it up with requested content, and occasionally free content.

Based on arequest recently, I'd like to take this opportunity to document my development process and keep the community posted on this project I've been tinkering away over the last few weeks.

Current Milestone

  • 1 default green pool table
  • 2 pool sticks
  • 1 Billiard ball set
  • 1 rack

Here are some screen shots / animated gifs of my work in development

Wire Frame
Basic build wireframe of the table to dimension. Preemptively making sure the project can be use in a VR game with the right dimensions

Wire Frame
Completed table with pockets. Modeling those pockets was quiet a challenge because of the poly count

Render test with a placeholder room and lighting. Everything checks out ok in this view. I might just complete the light box and add that to the pack too.

Textured the pool stick and ball set. Made sure the textures are all 2k, just in case I want to further theme the ball set. I need to work on texturing that poolstick a bit more.

UV Mapping
UV mapping the table. This was a bit tricky because I wanted to maintain no scaling on the models textures, except for the under part of the table.

I have a few more goals I'd like to hit, and renders to post here before calling the project done.

Next milestone

  • Level of detail (LOD) 0,1 - Pool Sticks, Ball
  • 1 alternate colored table felt
  • 1 themed pool ball - still need to figure this out
  • Export formats for all props in 3DS Max, Collada (DAE), FBX, OBJ, C4D
  • pool stick stand

Cheers

Ajay

Update on my next milestone, Ive completed the following and prepped some scene renders

  • Level of detail (LOD) 0,1 - Pool Sticks, Ball
  • 1 alternate colored table felt
  • Export formats for all props in 3DS Max, Collada (DAE), FBX, OBJ, C4D

I have to admit that I need to find a better process to export props to all the various formats. It can take quiet of time. For future projects, Im going to do this as my last step as I had made occasional changes to the model and repeated this process. My next steps are to research a batch process way of exporting art assets from within Cinema 4D, and a bunch of minor tweaks to the art asset to keep the poly count low as possible

Next milestone

  • Level of detail (LOD) 0,1 - Pool Sticks, Ball
  • 1 alternate colored table felt
  • 1 themed pool ball - still need to figure this out
  • Export formats for all props in 3DS Max, Collada (DAE), FBX, OBJ, C4D
  • pool stick stand

Found an opensource site that offers free emojis for non-commercial use. I might explore a few expressions from here. Though not an original idea, I think having it available as an added free option might be worth it.

over and out

For the second milestone, the bigger task on the list was to get the themed ball set complete. This was a ton of fun to research and explore a variety of emojis. I finally settled with the opensource emoji collection because they fit the theme very well. Thanks to the kind folks over at emojione.com for releasing their entire set of emojis under the creative common license. As mentioned in my last post, Im going to include this emoji set as a free / demo add on with the Pool Billiards Asset Pack
I have also figure out a pretty decent plugin to export multiple files to multiple file formats. It's a bit unstable and crashes Cinema 4D. I have mailed the developers requesting a fix or updates. Yet to here from those kind folks who had offered this plugin for free. Definitely worth donating them monies for the hard work they have put into this plugin.

Next milestone

  • Level of detail (LOD) 0,1 - Pool Sticks, Ball
  • 1 alternate colored table felt
  • 1 themed pool ball - still need to figure this out
  • Export formats for all props in 3DS Max, Collada (DAE), FBX, OBJ, C4D
  • pool stick stand

I might try and finish up this last art asset over the weekend and upload the optimized pack really soon

Stay tuned for new updates soon, cheers!
