phishing-mail in the name of itch.io

Hey there is a phishing mail going round again prompting people to download a random pdf file for information on a US  taxform, stating that it is coming from itch.io.

Maybe you want to have a look into it, to shut it down or something.

Let me know if you need further information in private.

Sender: taxsupport@taxidentity.com

taxidentity.com is the service we use for collecting tax information for sellers. You provided information to them when you initially set up your account for selling.

The email is providing your tax documentation for sales made in the year of 2023. You should save this document for your records.

Hope that helps.

Unless the sender was spoofed, this is legit.

Also how is this phishing, if they do not prompt you to log in to a fake site where they phish off your credentials? You do have an account that sells things and did fill out some tax survey things, did you not?

If you still have the mail, you can scrutinize the links in that mail and the mail headers. And is the pdf not attached, as the mail says? Use one of the dumb pdf readers that cannot be hacked to open it.

i know it is not legit. don't need to test it for myself. thought I should warn others. just not gonna share the mail info publicly. anyway thanks for your reaction. enjoy your day.

How do you know? That information would be helpful for others. Because taxidentity is a service itch works with. How can they distinguish the real mails from the fake mails?
