Hello fans of Fire Emblem style tactical battles, Capsule Monster Collecting, and dark lore! After many months of work I am happy to announce that not only is alpha demo of the game available, but the KICKSTARTER PREVIEW IS UP! If you like what you see below, follow now for more updates!

Capsule Collecting and Tactical Battle await you!

According to our records, you have died! CONGRATULATIONS! While we work on your next rebirth, we have arranged a game for you and your fellow recently un-alived compatriots! Your file here states that you love COLLECTABLE CAPSULE MONSTERS and TACTICAL RPG COMBAT and a RANDOMIZED GASHAPON MACHINE. Also CAPS LOCK!!!

The winner gets to have a single wish towards their rebirth, so battle tactically, make good trades, and hope the gashapon in the sky has mercy upon your soul!

Capsule Monsters: Tactics! is a single player, narrative-driven game with a hidden dark lore I challenge you to find!

-25 collectable capsule monsters, each with their own stats, attack types, flavor text, and custom art! 5 additional are planned for the final release!

-Tactical Battle System inspired by games like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.

-Randomized Gashapon system, which capsule monsters will you end up with?!? 

-Trade system with NPCs. 

-A heartwarming story about taking a hard look at the life you lived, and deciding what exactly it is you'd want to wish for your future reincarnation.

Working on the dlc lorebook that will be included at a cheaper price on the kickstarter! Little details will be hidden for fans of little easter eggs. Overall though I just love giving my little capsule monsters a more sugimori style official drawing. Since there's currently 20 Capsule Monsters (with 5 on the way) it's time consuming, but I feel the style is worth it? Let me know if you have thoughts!

Today I wanted to highlight something I got officially working recently: Three separate gashapon machines! In the original demo there was only the one, and a 1/20 weighted chance per Capsule Monster was a bit too chaotic and unbalanced. Now the Capsule Monsters are divided into one of 3 subclasses:

Physical Attackers: Focus on physical attacks and typically have very little to no magic attack ability

Magic Attackers: These users of magic might have a lower physical defense, but they are able to toggle between physical and magic attacks to prey on their enemies weaknesses!

Supporters: These Capsule Monsters afflict status affects to either slow down and poison enemies or boost their teammates in some way!

Class Highlight Day! When I first made the game ALL of my capsule monsters were physical attackers, but I think that tends to be a bit boring. While there’s less pure attackers now, they’re still pretty awesome. I mean… who wouldn’t want a Capsule Monster that was a DINOSAUR WITH A GUN?!??! Meet Deeno, the capsule in the top left corner! My wife actually came up with the idea for him and he holds a soft spot in my heart for that. 

Class Highlight Day! I knew I couldn’t have ALL my Capsule Monsters just be physical attackers, so to add diversity, I give you our magic attackers! Physically more frail, they add a different way of attacking. Plus…. They have an awesome explosion magic attack animation, and who doesn’t love that?!?


Class Highlight Day! A class made especially for the full version was our supporters class! Now you can raise the attack of your other capsule monsters! Up their defense! Poison your enemies! Throw dirt in their eyes to blind them! It’s in the name of support!!

Die forgotten or be immortalized! Win a wish towards your rebirth in Capsule Monsters: Tactics! The Fire Emblem - like turn-based game with collectable gashapon figures! Can you collect all 25 and unlock all the trophies?!? Get trophies by getting perfect victories each round, collecting all 25 capsule monsters...and winning a seemingly unwinnable battle...

I've had a lot of people ask me how long gameplay is, and it varies! I made 90% of all battles and cutscenes OPTIONAL. Don't care about backstories or lore? Skip it! 

I've seen other titles in the past where the story was strong, but it was shoved down your throat. I gave every npc a backstory, the world a strange intrigue, and hidden dark lore to find. But it's not my job as a game developer to make you explore it. Want to discover the 3 separate conversations each npc is given in each and every scene! Go for it! Do you prefer to just… play the game and collect all the hidden Capsule Monsters? By all means! It's certainly a… happy game without it.

The devil is in the details! Did you notice Every. Single. Capsule. Monster has it's own attack animation? Saw down enemies with Mr. Saw's Basic attack or whip them away!! These animations took a very long time to configure, but I think they add a lot of detail.

Very nice! 90% of the battles are optional is a really brave thing to do. Does that mean that the rest of the mandatory battles you can win without having to grind?

I would say some capsule monsters are stronger than others and a lucky pull can make a difference. There is money hidden around (especially before round 2 in the second area) and using strategy with ranged monsters will allow you to get through pretty much every fight. The only true battles I would mark as difficult (and required) are the final battle vs your rival and a secret extra battle that upon losing brings you to the trophy room regardless!

Officially back from my honeymoon and ready to go full steam ahead with the fire emblem inspired game with a gashapon machine that gives you capsule monsters!! Who is ready for turn-based gameplay???

Also working on final updates for the game. Working on controller support and a sell-back machine for Capsules. Anything else someone things I should add?

Posting here to ask a question that's been floating in my mind recently. I've been a bit curious when playtesting if I should have added area traps/effects? Are people who like fire emblem like gameplay a fan of that? Currently we just have obstacles and different starting locations for the Capsule Monsters. I feel like I never really used area affects? And traps could prove to just be more annoying? How about moving platforms...?

After some thinking on how to add more content without stretching out the story unnecessarily, I believe I've thought of something! End-game challenges! My tactics game is primarily "beat all the enemies" or "make it to x location". But with a Tactics game there are literally so many other things you can do? Protect the weaker mon while waves of enemies come! How many rounds can you survive with waves of enemies? A race to the finish line with traps abound! A maze battle map? I feel likes there's a lot of options that didn't quite fit the main gameplay, but could work as an optional challenge mode!

It may be stressful watching streamers play my game, but the advice is priceless! After some streamer feedback I made a point to not only show what set each Capsule Monster is, but list any extra skills both in writing and via a new little icon in the top right!

I'm excited to announce that several months after my original IGMC entry all 20 of my capsule monsters now have official watercolor style artwork! While you see these beautiful designs briefly in the game's trailer they will be utilized primarily in the game's lore book dlc. In celebration of this I will be sharing each capsule monster one by one and opening up questions anyone would have! The lore of this game is optional and a bit darker under the surface and I'm happy to give any hints!

We begin our countdown with the low ranged powerhouse Deeno!! Deeno is what you get when your wife looks at you in your stressed state. When you only have 19 capsule monster designs and you desperately need a 20th and you are officially out of ideas and the igmc is only like 31 days and you are running out of time and- ahem. It's what you get when your wife is a large jurassic park fan and simply says "what if one was a dinosaur"? Thus, Deeno, the hat wearing dinosaur that uses a machine gun to defeat his enemies, was born.

Continuing our countdown with Capsule Monster #14 Plug-Go! Plug-Go was originally meant to be the design of a gameboy game I wanted to make that was inspired by Megaman Battle Network! While that hasn’t worked out I’m happy I was able to recycle his design!

While working towards the Kickstarter release I work further on the game demo and share the demo with play-testors for further feedback. I'm excited to announce I've received a great deal of feedback from a fellow tactics fan!

Updates coming that are completed:

  • Updated language to better emphasize that the game is a one player, narrative driven game with dark lore.
  • Updated Damage formula to Math.max(1, Math.floor(0.5*(3*a.atk - 2*b.def))) to better account for damage variation
  • Removed a bug where damage could be slightly varried from the battle preview.

Needed updates:

  • Update CapMons to better fit art
  • redraw cursor, arrows, state icons (E for not active, X for stunned, A for automatic).
  • A battle log is needed to help keep track of battle
  • Countering enemies attack first if their speed is higher, this is a bit too punishing.
  • Poison needs to be reinstated, I will be working on this bug
  • Stats will be reworked to allow for higher HP pools and more consistent damage between the rarities.
  • Battle Prep stage is being slightly expanded to allow for more choice as to where to put your CapMons.
  • After further thinking, I will be updating both the range and "attack shape" to allow for a more strategic approach to battling. Why can't some CapMons attack in an x pattern? A straight line? The regular 4 directions is boring and it'll make players decide exactly why to play some CapMons over the others
  • States such as drain and blind have been pointed out as either weak or inconsistent, something I will be addressing.

Hello all! As promised I am overjoyed to announce our first MAJOR OVERHAUL UPDATE!!! *airhorns* 

This kind of update is only possible after an incredible amount of feedback from lets players and playtesters, so I want to thank them sincerely.

Updates:

  • Introducing a new and exciting challenge mode!! Is our demo too easy? Did you get a rare pull and want to show off on stream? Please talk to the mysterious 2nd announcer who has 6 additional challenges PER ROUND! As a game developer, I struggled to complete some of the stage 2 challenges, so I hope you tactics fans have a blast!
  • Updated language to better emphasize that the game is a one player, narrative driven game with dark lore.
  • Updated Damage formula to Math.max(1, Math.floor(0.5*(3*a.atk - 2*b.def))) to better account for damage variation
  • Removed a bug where damage could be slightly varied from the battle preview.
  • When attacking the attacker now ALWAYS hits first, even if slower
  • Stats have been reworked to allow for higher HP pools and more consistent damage between the rarities.
  • Battle Prep stage has been being slightly expanded to allow for more choice as to where to put your capmons. For challenge mode you can now also swap which CapMon in your battle set you want to use for 2 v 3 and 1 v 3 battles.
  • Improved Vampiric drain to always do a minimum of 4 damage and heal Vampy by 4.
  • Rally Troops now increases both physical and magic attack by 2
  • Kickstarter placeholders 1-5 now have a correct face graphic
  • Blind state now lowers physical attack accuracy to 0 AND removed the ability for magical attacks
  • Adjusted machine rarities slightly to eliminate possibility of a round 1 epic to improve balancing. Rates of epics are 10-12.5% round 2 onwards 
  • Dialogue updates to opening scenes
  • Vampy as an enemy will not only use skill when under 50%
  • Vampy's skill "Vampiric Drain" was made more powerful
  • Additional lore was hidden!

planned updates:

  • Infographic for challenge mode to ensure players understand the new "mon swapping" features
  • Update capmons to better fit art
  • redraw cursor, arrows, state icons (E for not active, X for stunned, A for automatic).
  • A battle log is needed to help keep track of battle

  • Flameo speed shows as 1
  • blind and attack up not lasting long enough, make longer

Continuing our countdown with Capsule Monster #8 Lady Armor! A brave little lady who can power up her teammate’s attacks, this support type CapMon is just doing her best!

Continuing our countdown with Capsule Monster #7 Bakey! A favorite of grandma Wendy, Bakey came to life one day and was given various kitchen utensils to protect itself. It screams, for behind it’s shades he is blind.

Minor post while I get things together but just wanted to wish everyone a happy Juneteenth! I'm proud to have a game with the main protagonist be an Afro-Latina who is a lesbian! We all need more women of color content!
