Is it fine to have a donation option on a free game that uses copyright characters?

I personally do not have any games that have a donation prompt and all the games I have are free, but I'm wondering if having a donation option on fangames with copyrighted characters is legal and allowed on itch.io, as I know having paid games with copyrighted characters is liable.

Fan games are in a legal gray area from the start, hard to say where accepting donations lies. Either way, itch.io staff only takes action if copyright holders complain about your game. Hope this helps.
