Idea: Gamify reporting abuse & spam

I just reported some spam that had been on a game page for over a year. It gave me an idea. Itch.io's report system is easy to use, but are people using it as much as they could be?

My idea:

Itch Gold

If a user reports spam or abuse to the itch staff and the staff act on the tip, then the itch user gains a community point.  Perhaps other actions that are good for the itch community could also be rewarded with Itch points.

I have no idea what they would be used for but there are a lot of possibilities:

  • credits for games
  • achievements with itch's API
  • special badge on profile page or something.
  • ????

I think this could be an interesting idea, but our spam volume is generally pretty low that it makes sense to just have a moderator go through it as it comes in. Especially since it could be hard designing an economy around blocking spam.

We do have a spam detector but it doesn't outright block people, so I'll end up going through the queue later to clean up things that weren't taken care of by another moderator.

I think the permanent solution is to have a pending posts system so those posts that are caught by our filter need to be approved before showing up.
