I started selling my first game recently, but it's also possible to buy it in physical format. What I'd like to do is give those who buy a physical copy free access to the download here, so they can qualify for updates. Is that possible?

Sure! Look under Distribute->Download keys when editing your game. You can hand out a download key with each physical copy of the product. It's even possible to generate them in bulk. Not sure about the logistics of putting a different download key on each physical copy of the product, but that way each buyer can claim their own digital copy. Hope this helps!
