Why are there so many horror games on itch.io?

I know its October and Halloween is approaching, but why dose it seem like itch.io only has horror games on its front page? Is it because horror games are easier to make then regular games?

While I don’t see that many horror themed games on the front page or the new releases my hypothesis is this: T’is the season. ;) I think October just makes people more interested in season-themed stuff. You could enjoy fake witches hats and pumpkin decoration all year round, but there’s just more interest in those kinds of games. And Halloween isn’t a surprise event or something, so developers can/could polish up their Halloween-themed game well in advance but wait with the release for a few weeks until there’s more seasonally motivated interest. Plus: Right now kids couldn’t go Trick-or-Treating, so there’s probably additional interest.

That being said, actual horror games seem to be rather hard to make. Most self-proclaimed horror games I have seen in recent years could be more fittingly labeled as shocker games. A jump-scare puts players on edge - but they aren’t horrified by the content.

Yes. Thank you for explaining.

Because horror games are awesome- two of our three games are horror XD

It's strange how many sites get reputations for certain genres, like Kongregate with idle games, and it's hard to say why...

It seems like when the website lunches, the first game that get popular that has a certain genre, that genre get applied to the website. And everyone keeps recreating it. That's just my theory though.

Yeah, maybe people who go to a site often get inspired by the games they like and make their own, and maybe some devs think "right, this is popular, we need to release games like this..." (alternatively, they might say "our game isn't like that, so we won't release it here").

And so it basically creates a endless loop that cant be broken.

There is lot of horror games due to large amount of horror and spooky jams.  Even halloween may increase the number and also people may like them highly
