I cannot find a tutorial anywhere?
I don’t own the game in question, but usually I just download the new game (just like the old one) and it works.
The Itch app can be used to update games installed through it; otherwise, ask in the comment section on the game page. Hope this helps.

When you say your friend gifted the game to you, what did you receive? The game attached to an email or an email with a link to itch.io?
A link to itch.io which allowed me to download the game bc she bought another copy for me
