This is excellent design! Brings me back to the Tony Hawk Pro Skater days, when I was trying to pull off crazy tricks to find those collectibles. The gritty sci-fi aesthetic vibes perfectly with the gameplay direction. I feel a connection with classic anime like Cowboy Bebop and Megalo Box.
The character dialogue hints that there's something more beneath the clouds. I'm curious to know more. Why do they live so high in the sky? What do they use all this tech for? Why is the dog's medicine hanging out on the power lines?
The controls were intuitive and responsive. I even got a sense that I could swing out more by holding the back button even when facing up which is really thoughtful as I would have been the kind of player to get stuck under a roof with the zipline. I can imagine you could make some really creative levels with these mechanics to explore. Maybe even a series of entire maps. I love the direction on this one and I hope to see more in the future!
Thank you for this insightful comment (´∩。• ᵕ •。∩`) ♡ This is great feedback!
I spoke to a few of the designers at my school and they also recommended I add a bit more of the contextual narrative elements like you're describing. It is a little difficult to tell what is going on haha. And I agree, I think there's more of an expected element of joy in the act of gifting that could shine through here.
Originally, I wanted the game to be split into two phases: baking and delivering. The baking portion was supposed to be a cozy ASMR experience where you interact with each step of the baking process in a relaxing and immersive way. I think that would have given players a more personal connection to the act of giving bread to hungry villagers. The dark clouds are meant to represent a sort of miasma given off by the hunger that clears when you feed them bread! I think it would have helped to have munching sound effects.
But thank you so much for the kind words! And I do think I will continue to work on this one to see what others think about the concept :)
This game has style :o I can tell you put a lot of work in this! I love these kinds of town sims where you run around, meet people, and help the townsfolk solve problems. They used to have a lot of these types of games in the Xbox and PS2 era. Dark Cloud was one of those I sunk so many hours into (=^ ◡ ^=)
My frames were a bit low so I wasn't able to take in the full experience. Although I did find the platforming portion on top of the trees! Ultimately, I got stuck when I fell between the trees and couldn't move.
Honestly though, this game has an awesome concept ,and I'd like to play it more if you keep working on it!
Was curious if anyone made cozy or heartfelt games for the jam? I'd love to see what you submitted!
We also made a cozy game about gliding around on an island and delivering bread :) https://itch.io/jam/tgcxcoreblazer/rate/3631789
Let's share and rate each other's games!
Shoot animation only works for right facing character. Are you planning to add additional animation types, like throw item, crouch, crouchwalk, etc? It just doesnt have a large enough selection to use for universal prototyping. Otherwise i would probably buy this and use it for every new isometric game I make!
Hey I have a project you might be interested in. I've been writing this Sci Fi story for about 2 years, and I've decided I'm better at building a vision for a game than writing an actual book. So I started turning it into an RPG maker game. I've been making games for about 3 years, so this might be my first commercial title. Would you like to check it out?
