Hey everyone! I'm looking for feedback on the latest update to Caveneer, a 2D survival-exploration game set deep underground.

This update focuses on improving gameplay feel, polish, and usability — and I'd really appreciate your thoughts on a few specific areas:

🧠 What I'd Love Feedback On:

  • Does the foliage and tile variety make the world feel more alive or immersive?

  • How does the combat feel with the new heavy attack system and randomized crits?

  • Is the UI and inventory system clear and intuitive now?

  • Any thoughts on how the audio and camera changes affect your experience?

🔧 Update Highlights

🌱 World & Exploration

  • New foliage spawning system

  • More unique tile variants

  • Rooms now track “cleared” status on the minimap

⚔️ Combat Changes

  • Heavy attack mechanic

  • Wider crit randomization

  • Bosses reset if you leave their room

  • Lowered player height for collision accuracy

🛠️ UI & Inventory

  • Complete UI and settings overhaul

  • Dimmed unavailable crafting items

  • Inventory count display added

  • Quick drop items by holding the drop button

🔊 Technical & Audio

  • New ambient track: mistake.ogg

  • More interaction SFX

  • No more fade delays in menus

  • Camera now follows player instantly (no lerp)

  • World seed selector added

🐛 Bug Fixes

  • Fixed movement jitter in certain areas

  • Fixed minimize crash for some Windows users

If you try it out, let me know what works, what feels off, or what you’d like to see improved! Your feedback really helps shape future updates.

Thanks for reading and testing Caveneer!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions! This is a very early version of the game so there isn't much content. I am working on a volume setting right now so it's good to see that I am on the right track. There was a way to expand the map by pressing 'M' but that was scrapped and I guess I left that in the game page so thank you for pointing that out. I will admit, the crafting menu is very poorly put together so I will definitely work on cleaning it up and making it less confusing. I do have a goal for the game in mind but that is not in the game at the moment, so as you pointed out, there isn't much to do other than explore, craft, and kill enemies. AND THANK YOU FOR THE CRASH REPORT!

I did setup a minimum value but I guess I set it still too close to the player. Also, I did want the game to have this cool retro feel since the limitation was 4 colors and I'm not much of an artist.

Thanks! I don't know why but for some reason on any game jam that I do the game always turns out challenging. I guess it's just because I don't get enough time to just go in and make it easier!

Thank you! I noticed that but decided just to keep it since every time I make a game I guess I get really good at it and then everyone else complains it is way too difficult. Also, I ran out of time so I couldn't even add all the things I wanted.

Thank you! I rushed it at the end but I had so many more plans to add way more enemy variants.

Thank you! Yeah, I rushed the game in the end a lot cause life got in the way but it was fun, so I ain't complaining.

I'm happy you enjoyed the stupidity just as much as we did!

Glad you enjoyed, thanks!

Thanks, I'm happy to see you enjoyed the game!

HISTORY:

This game was made for the mini jam 150 game jam but has been decided to be put through more work.

GAME:

The character is a wizard who has just started to develop his magical powers and uses them to power up light through the cave to navigate. More on how he got in the cave later aka the story section ;0

STORY:

Yes this is a poem but too bad it works well:

In a forest deep, a wizard did roam, Through the trees, he found his way home. Step by step, unaware of the ground, He plummeted down, a fall quite profound.

A novice wizard, powers so slight, Summoning fire, his only respite. With flames ablaze, he lit the night, Magic and skill, can he make it right?

Through the shadows, his journey unfurls, A tale of magic in enchanted swirls. With fire's glow, his path he charts, A wizard's journey, where it all starts.

FUTURE:

This game will be updated for some time, probably 3 months, and then will stop due to us having school and a ton of other projects to work on. Don't expect too much since it is just me and my brother. We are hoping to grow a team in the future to help out but that's it for now. Oh, I also forgot the web page is getting an update after I have figured out how to use color schemes and some pretty nice font so that is good.
