No worries! I should've phrased it better to not cause ambiguity, my bad.
Yeah, learning a new engine was really a bold choice, especially after not using any for the past several years lol but I decided to take that risk instead of making a game from scratch with pygame like I'm used to, cuz it's definitely more efficient and sane to develop a game with an engine when you only got 4 days xD
Godot was super user-friendly and its scripting language is quite simple and remeniscent of python, so it wasn't hard for me to adopt. But I might go back to Unity for making 3D games cuz I'm kinda unsure of Godot's 3D capabilities, although I've been told otherwise.. Thanks for asking ^^
Appreciate all the kind words and your time spent on playing my game, it means sooo much to me! Although, I think I've got some clarifications to do here:
1. This game was anything BUT well-scoped at the start, that's why I had to cut the overwhelming majority of it from the release in order to finish in time - i.e. the dialogue system, objectives (tutorial), underground/cave level*, many interactables (cannons, chests/vases with randomized loot that could either help you or harm, bombs, poisonous mushrooms, finite food source that'd heal better than the infinite one), animated liquids and sky, main menu, audio, etc. Basically, keeping just the barebone foundations of it.
2. This is not my first game ever, it's my first successful GameJam submission (and/or Godot project, if that's what you mean). You can check out my other projects on my page, if you're interested, I'd be very grateful))
3. Yeah, the UX and interactions are a bit clunky cuz I'm new to the engine, and couldn't find a way (nor had time) to make them any better. And that's totally on me, I don't blame anyone who found it hard to adopt to how the game functions.
After all that, I'm still so pleased that you think it's completely playable, glad to see people appreciate my work, and give such good critique!
Thank you for playing! It's a shame that I couldn't realize everything I'd planned for this game.. but looking at the bright side of things, I'm happy I could submit this in time and mark it my first GameJam success; really went with the "make it exist first, refining can be done later" approach (which costed me scrapping 40% of the initial scope), and I'm glad you still enjoyed it :)
Thank you for playing and all the kind words! I admit, time was not forgiving to me in the playtesting regard. Just make sure to select the key in your inventory then interact with the door, it should open.
Happy to hear you liked the art, I'm planning to release it as an asset pack soon! I also agree that the game has potantial and I'd really love to implement all the things I have in mind for it and see where it goes, but now I may need some time to relax from that absolute mess of development that happenned in these 4 days lmao
I'm so sorry to hear about your not-so-good experience with the game. It's just my first time submitting a jam game, and I'm usually the type of dev that likes to take their time making a game: playtesting, trouble-shooting etc. and 4 days was too short for me to do all that. For now, I can suggest a workaround for that issue: if you press space, you drop the item currently selected, which frees up space in the inventory.
Glad you enjoyed my artwork though! Appreciate the feedback.
Oh... should've really checked whether the restart works or not, I added it the last second (I intended the players refreshing the page to replay lol), thanks for pointing that out and playing the game, and even replaying!!
As for a tutorial, something alike was planned but I HAD to cut it out from the release cuz deadline was due. Anyway, I will try my best to make the initial player adaption to controls as easy as possible, again thanks for the feedack!
Thank you for playing! Yeah, the idea of making a game like this has been living in my mind rent-free for years, and thanks to GMTK, I finally had the opportunity to realize the idea, that's why I think the connection to the theme might feel like a bit of a stretch lol
Also I'm really glad you enjoyed the graphics; I made them myself in Photopea using the PICO-8 color palette, and I plan to release it soon!
