https://kagarisoft.itch.io/rol

First kagarisoft jam, the idea of this jam is to help new and veteran developers to create their first or next project. The theme of this Jam will be artificial intelligences, you must include in your story a character that is an AI. The genre of the game can be whatever the developer chooses.

Submission rules:
  • A visual novel must be submitted.
  • The use of creative commons assets is allowed (Recommended for low-resource developers)
  • No images or AI-generated text are allowed.
  • No +18 games allowed
  • No games or stories that use content from: Anime series, movies, etc. Only original material is accepted.
  • The story must last at least 1 hour and must have at least 2 routes, if you like you can extend to more routes and the duration of the game.
  • The story and the game must be in English

RATING:

Your visual novel will be rated by people who upload their games (fellow developers) and by the public.

The following will be judged:

  • UI
  • Music
  • Assets
  • Story  (history is more highly valued)

Developers are invited to share the jam page links with their players / audience so that they can participate in the voting.

Note:  Regarding voting, please note that this is a criticism of your game. And it is recommended to listen to the public that played your game if you mention something about it, it is also recommended to leave a comment to the developers extending a little more your vote.

Join!

Thank you for your comments. I will work hard to correct any problems you have seen. As for the English language, it is not native English. I am very sorry if there are errors in the English language, I will communicate to my translator the errors. Any feedback on the English translation will serve as experience so thank you very much for your comment :D

Regarding the nickname “Nora” thank you very much for your comment, I will correct it for version 2.0.

If it does not produce any error it is because the bug is not in the game, but in the operating system itself.

The problem with the web version is because of the size of the files, and because the web version is not 100% stable; if a bug occurs I may not be able to fix it, I can escalate the bug to the engine developer but that may take time to be patched in a future version. Another reason why I don’t use web, is that ROL uses custom python inside the game, and if I were to create a web-only build I would have to modify the whole structure of the game. I suppose that when I publish the 2.0 version I could make a web demo, but now I don’t see it possible because of the way I made the game.

Problem related to what you say: https://github.com/renpy/renpy/issues/4091

Using a virtual machine in the Monterey version I saw that the game does run correctly, if you are running the game in Ventura Beta (13.1) try to update the operating system; I am commenting this because I found a similar problem in the reports of the engine I use and it seems to be an apple problem.

Hum, that’s strange. can you send me the traceback.txt and log.txt file? While I can’t test on mac, I can try to fix the bug using those files. https://kagarisoft.com/support

There is a free version, according to the rules that is the one that should be downloaded.

Does this jam have a prize? - No, the prize would be the completion of a story or the story as you would like to tell it. Take it as a new achievement to improve yourself.

What engine should I use? - You can use any visual novel engine, Ren’Py is recommended. You can also use NaniNovel in Unity.

Can I use this project after the jam? - Sure, the idea of this jam is to help new and veteran developers to create their first or next project.

Can I modify the game after the jam? - Sure!

Can I upload a demo or an incomplete game? - No! Only completed games are accepted.

Can I make a paid game after the jam is over? - If your idea is to generate revenue of course! However, if you are using CC art (free to use) it is recommended and requested that you read the terms of use of those assets.

Where can I find free use assets? - On itch there are a lot of artists who publish free use assets.

Can I use a game already finished or from a past jam? - No. You cannot use a completed or started game, you must create your project from 0 and submit it during the submission period.

What should the project look like? -

This AI character can be a love interest, a friend, etc.

Or maybe the protagonist could be an AI and have human friends, or they could be artificial intelligences. It’s up to the developer to decide what to do, they have total creative freedom. What matters is that this character is relevant to the plot of the story.

Some examples to give you an idea:

  • Lucy -The Eternity She Wished For-
  • Hate plus

should I only start when the jam is officially on? - You must plan the project before the jam is on and start working when the sending period is enabled, or plan the project and work on it during the sending period. Keep in mind that you have time to submit, the jam lasts from February to June; after the submission deadline, projects cannot be submitted to the jam.

Is voting obligatory?

  • No it is not, but it is recommended to play the projects of other creators and leave your comments on the project. The ranking system will only be used to rate a visual novel that is of interest, and that attracted a lot of attention.

Can I invite my audience to vote?

  • Yes, you can…

My game was disqualified or removed, why?

  • Disqualified: If your game was disqualified, the reason for the disqualification is included on the submission page. Being disqualified indicates that your game does not comply with the rules and you can resubmit your game once you have corrected it.

  • Removed: In the case of being removed, it is because your game does not comply with any rules and was spammed. Posting multiple times will result in an immediate disqualification and the user will be reported for spamming.

Can I send this game to another jam while participating in this one?

  • No, you can’t

The minimum is 2 endings, each route must have an end. If you want to extend the story further you can create more routes with their endings. The idea is that your project is solid and complete.

the routes can be influenced later in the story, and that is what is important. for example, a bad decision can lead to something bad happening to some character, and that leads to the end of that route.

so the player must influence what happens in the game, and must be encouraged to choose which path to take.

I hope this solves your doubt, if you have more questions I will try to answer them.

good luck with your project 😁👍
