This game was very impressive, especially for a game jam with the features & end-to-end player experience. After becoming familiar with the core gameplay, I began to explore the latest level, seeing the contributions of the previous players. To exhaust my remaining energy for the day, I settled on assisting with other peoples' gardens, & starting my own. I plan to log in the next day to see any changes in the level I was in, or to check out other levels.

I will be looking forward to what you & your team makes next. Some feedback:

  • For the first-time user experience when spawning into the level, the UI felt a bit overwhelming, although the utility is there to teach the player. Perhaps you can stagger some of the initial information into sequences, so the player gradually learns the basic controls as they're traversing the environment.
  • It would be nice to view the level name when pausing the game, so the player knows which level they can return to on another day.
  • The 'action ready' cursor needs some tuning for accuracy, so that it is accurate on where the action is ready to be performed, & the location where the player initiates the action.

Congrats!

We saw it! & of course, playtest feedback is valuable. Looking forward to trying your game out.

I felt that the timer was fine-- It gave me limited time to perform the available actions, without feeling too rushed. I think an alternative for the blockout proportions, would be to get your metrics for your main or playable characters, get their relative proportions right, in addition to their props, etc. Or start from the intractable props & characters, since making that feel good will affect the moment-to-moment gameplay. Starting from the background & gameplay areas seems fine too.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. I agree with a lot of those ideals as well.

In regards to your list—

1. It was all of our first time meeting & working together, being from different countries, timezones, & cities. Collaboration was a value on our team.

2. Our first milestone was Concept, so having a solid elevator pitch & pillars was an early high priority. Aimed to get contribution & feedback from everyone, leading to consensus.

3. At the start, we prioritized sustainable development, meaning balancing work-life-game jam. Avoiding all-nighters & going over capacity. Scoped accordingly, with some individual autonomy on how people get things done.

4. We aligned our ideals, & goals of the project early on. Moreover, we got sign-off on the schedules so we can hold each other accountable to deliver within the deadlines.

5. We set priorities, & stack-ranked our features. So that if anything got cut, it would be something lower priority that would not be detrimental to the core game experience.

I’ll be sure to check out your team’s game & give feedback.

Just played your team's game-- awesome work! What was most challenging in the development of your game?

I tried to call 911 too lol

This game is so cute & cohesive-- the music, gameplay, UX, & art. Awesome work.

Playtest feedback: my post-game results mentioned that I did not make any friends =(, which seemed to go against my interactions with some of them. However I did not get all stars with any of the characters, so that's probably why. And in the large dialogue boxes, it would be good to distinguish between spokean dialogue, & nonverbal cues, possibly via parantheses '( )' or some other punctuation. Anyways, I enjoyed this game. Keep it up!

Hello! From the Solarity team, we wanted to share some insight into our process of crafting the visual art for the first level in the game.

Please view the two images below on our process-- from the Artist's & Producer's points of view.

We would also like to hear from you all in the comments, on any challenges you've faced & your means of tackling them on your own games.

2/2: Flow of Deliverables  by Development Phase:

  • We primarily leveraged a waterfall method, thoroughly completing the earlier development phases with confidence, before proceeding to the next ones.

Update: we now have a 2D Artist, & Game Designer. I'm following up with folks to fill the last role for Engineer / Audio. Thanks all!

To-be-determined whether the game will be 2D or 3D.

Update: following up with Designers / Coders. Thanks all!
