I've finished some code refactoring, and the perk system, now it is implemented in Unity. 

The thing's gonna be easy. There are two types of perks: general and hero perk. Every hero has a perk. You can choose one before the start of the current mission, and it is up to you to take your general or hero perk with you. A few perks for the example: 10% more damage, 20% faster weapon reload, a wolfhound who follows and protects heroes...

And what else happened this week? 

The basic sheets and equations of the game balance have been completed. In order to adjust the difficulty of the missions to the points of the heroes' progression, I've developed a simulation. This tells you a given mission and heroes of a given level, how much medkit, ammo and other resources needs to complete. The point is that we count an efficiency index on every hero and every enemy, then compare the efficiency index of heroes and enemy groups. This is a good little inequality, from which we get the difference that nicely drawn the missing resources.

So I think the loot system is finally “done”.

You get some loot from crates like cars and boxes. The crates have a new interfaces. Every lootable object has a "search" icon. To loot you click the object, and your troops gotta go there. Loot takes some time, and finally you get your reward. Thanks to Unity, I made the animation of the looted items a little more flexible.

And how does this all work? Our hero's field of view is of great importance, because outside the field of view only the object is visible, but the icon is not. Falling objects can take many forms such as ammunition, shield, medkit, cards, keys, etc. There will be items that only a given hero can use, and some that anyone can use. I designed a simple little user interface for this common objects: by clicking on the object you can choose which hero to run for. Items can't be picked up yet, I need to implement it in unity, so this will be an upgrade for next week!

First of all, sorry for my poor english. I don't speak english very well. Yes this is really a big task, mainly because I have "won" the task myself so far when Google started to require game developers to upload an API28 and 64-bit version of the app:) Since then (with haxeflixel 4.4.0), the game has serious performance issues on android. I've decided to leave the haxe framework and port it to Unity. 

I am lucky that I have built the previous code in haxe that kind of logic and with standard game design patterns so that it is not difficult to translate it into unity. There are some code snippets that I can use all in one. The porting progress is also helped by the fact that you do not have to produce graphics or logic, just implement it. The whole process gives me the opportunity to refactor my work and improve the game. What also slows down the work is that Unity has its own features. Because of this, for each game element you transpose, I have to think about whether there is a simpler or more effective solution in Unity.  

Finally, it is a positive element that I decided to make a PC version as a result of all this. I trust that this work will benefit the whole game. By the way, I have a blog post about how to get started. I try to report regularly on progress.

  • Heroes protect themselves, but only if you don't move them. 
  • You can also intervene in battles, each hero has unique skills, such as rifle, shotgun, crowbar, shield, molotov cocktail, grenade, etc. 
  • You can find power ups
  • You can get pets and perks who help you in the fight
  • In cars and crates you can find ammunition, bandages, open as much as possible.
  • Game control is simple, just tap on the hero and drag your finger wherever you want to go with it. 
  • You can control multiple heroes at once, you can select them all with double tap. 
  • If the whole team is selected, the same way, by dragging the hero, the others will follow.
  • You have to complete unique missions as you explore the world. 
  • Be careful, search the cars and and beware of the darkness...

DEMO CONTAINS

Project is in active development so the demo available only for Android and there may be bugs.  The current version contains the following:

  • 3 heroes
  • 7 missions
  • 3 power ups
  • 3 perks
  • Provides about 1-2 hour of gaming experience

UPCOMING PLANS

I am a solo developer and I have been developing and loving the game for 2 years. Now I had to leave the existing framework (haxe), and I've been porting to Unity for 2 months. 

There will be a lot of new features in full version. The most exciting things I work on:

  • Unity version
  • Better lights and much more beautiful and scary nights
  • Bigger world with more maps
  • More missions
  • Brighter graphics and better effects
  • More badass heroes and new enemies
  • Even more brutal weapons
  • Arena and daily missions
  • Collectible and sellable junks and power ups
  • Smoother gameplay and 50-60 fps on low end devices
  • PC version (!)

I'm on it! I'm in a huge task because I have to upgrade the whole system to Unity, because in the former haxe environment, dev was tremendously difficult and complicated. This porting task has been going on for 2 months now, and I need to remake in Unity everything I created earlier. But both visuals and the control will be much better and fluid. Of course there will be new contents and mechanics in this improved version. I don't know when this will be done, I need 1-2 months for sure.  Anyway the code is cross-platform, if there is a real need for it, then the next release might come out on PC too. I really want this game to be really cool!
