Thank you so much! Yes, I had similar thoughts when I was debugging the progress bars to see how well they react to the scores calculation in real time (And yes, actually the scores are calculated at ~4Hz during the gameplay, not only after time's up, so adding a speed mode is not much extra work, and having some real-time feedback is always good). The only pain was that those bars I drew were just too big/thick to fit in the scene haha, so I ended up removing them. But I'm looking for an artist (if I can find one :)to remake everything, including the UIs, so a more visually appealing and less crowded scoring system might enable this speed mode!😀
Thanks for the feedback! And yes, the scoring was the trickiest feature to balance haha. The main issue is that using a circular brush makes it inherently difficult to carve sharp edges. My workaround was a tier-based algo that acts as a buffer, boosting your raw percentage to a lifted 'tier score' as long as you hit a certain threshold. But even with that, some of the carving 'masks' I made are definitely too thin. I'm looking for an artist to work on a full rebuild (if I can find one :), which includes remaking the masks, and I will try improving the scoring mechanics in future builds😀
After two weeks of solo dev for the Uplifting Game Jam, Dear Stranger is now live and playable in your browser! There is also a Windows build for anyone who'd rather keep it on their machine.
The game is small and quiet. A bottle washes ashore carrying a postcard, illustrated by a stranger who built a sandcastle here before you. You have three minutes and a rising tide. You build their castle from the picture, take a photo of yours, write a short note, and send it back out to sea. The next person picks up where you left off, and so on. Eight handmade postcards, one Zen sandbox mode, no leaderboards, no pressure.

The whole thing was built around a single idea I keep coming back to: that nobody is ever truly forgotten as long as someone after them keeps building. The bottles in the current jam build save locally, but the dream is to wire them together so that the castle and note you send really do reach the next stranger who plays. That part is on the post-jam roadmap.
If you give it a try, I would love to hear what you think. What landed for you? What didn't? Comments on this page are open and I read everything. Even one sentence helps me know what to keep, what to change, and what the game is actually doing for people who aren't me.

And if you spend time in Zen Mode, please share your castles. Zen has a camera button that exports a clean photograph of whatever you've built, no UI, no watermark beyond the small logo. Post your pictures in the comments, share them on social media with the game's name, or message them to me directly. I would genuinely love a small gallery of strangers' castles to look at, and I think other players would too.
