This is the last 0.3.x update of CHAIR Champions, where all characters, tracks and chairs are available from the beginning on! With version 0.4, the Office Store and an unlocking mechanism will be added, as well as more power ups and/or another game mode. 

Would be nice to get some feedback on the revamped tracks (more speed, less obstacle evasion!) - especially with super and ultra Turbo option activated!

When I started making it (it was for a game jam), I didn't have much in my mind of what it might become one day and as time went by I used this game to learn new stuff and try out different things gamedev-wise.

At some point I wanted to add multiplayer, so I've added a local split screen mode - which took AGES to implement because I underestimated the effort! 😅

Anyway, I will probably add online multiplayer at one point when I want to get into netcode because I agree, any competitive game (or game that can be played competitively) is better with/against human players - but it's really complex and will take a while to implement. 

However, the next big update (0.4.x) will add an unlocking mechanic: all tracks, characters and chairs except one (or maybe two characters) will be locked and can be 'bought' in The Office Store with in-game currency that you'll get through doing races! (And don't worry, there will be NO micro transactions whatsoever. I hate it and don't want to have them in my game 😉) This should add a bit of a motivation to the game compared to having all things unlocked from the beginning (except the secret characters and chair 😉).

Thanks for the suggestions regarding track design and 'instructions'. In fact, I've already planned to add a tutorial with a smaller 'tutorial track' to explain the game. But this will first be added after the unlocking mechanic because there will also be more pickups in the future and I'll add another action button to activate the pickups at the time you want to. The tutorial will cover this as well. 🙂

One last thing: you choose your chair before the race starts and on the track, any chair you'll choose will become the chair you've chosen before, just the colours differ 😉

And yes, being good at the game/races is much about memorizing the tracks but also about reacting to different (mostly random) situations like being pushed away, trip over carpets - or being knocked off 😉 I know that it can be punishing but at the same time you're only stay half as long knocked off than the AI opponents and the AI opponents have also a higher probability of tripping over carpets... I felt like this would dampen the punishment of falling off and was also required to not be too frustrating.

The "health" mechanic was a reaction to many earlier criticism where players asked why you could even get off the chair or not start on the chair right away. I want to have that "rumble for the chairs" at the beginning because I think it adds to the fun - and for that, I had to come up with something to make it more interesting 😁 Maybe I'll add the possibility to refill the hearts in a future update... We'll see!

The blue energy bar and energy drinks you can collect is a kind of stamina. When you run out you'll slow down until it's being refilled again.

The "looking ahead"-mechanic is the same amount of pixels in every direction. It might be due to the perspective that some directions feel like looking further than others. 

I have some questions as well: did you try out any of the other seasons? What about secret codes (see community posts 😉)? Did you find out that you can use some of the environmental props? 😉

I'm always having an eye on style consistency/coherence so the players won't get any "eye cancer" 😅 But I've also learned a lot about Pixelart during the last nearly 3 years of development! It always feels nice when I get positive feedback for that effort. So thanks again!

I've also always had the premise of having nice, foeward-pushing Chiptune music for the races, so I paid higher attention to that as well! 😏

And yes, the AI generated backgrounds originated from the original game jam where I've submitted this game - and didn't have much time left... Since then I only refined the style of the backgrounds...

I know that there's a great controversy and ethical claims regarding using AI generated content and I might change them at some point when the game is at a more advanced state but it's not a big priority rn. But thanks for your thoughts on that! 👍

I got some questions as well: did you try out different seasons as well? What about some secret codes (see community posts 😉)?

Basic Pong clone with an in-game shop where you can buy other ball colours for in-game money.

As previously stated, control hints would help new players. It would also be nice to move the paddle with the mouse.

The pad's speed is pretty slow and the ball should be able tobounce off in different angles, depending on where it lands on the paddle. otherwise it gets pretty boring really fast, as it just feels like watching the "DVD"-Logo - just with a paddle...

I joined your stream while you were playing and thought it was a bit... chaotic 😂 

Especially when you started the race without getting on the chair first! But this gave me the idea to add an indicator that's pointing to the next available chair, so you know at a beginning of a race where to go. 😉

The 2-Player-Mode is only local split-screen. That's why you couldn't get it running over network/Internet. 🙃🙂

This game is far from being finished and every stream/feedback helps to make it better!

Some comments from my side:

- I had a few more complaints about the 'easy' difficulty not being easy. What everyone telling me that has in common: They aren't playing much racing games. That's why I added another, easier difficulty: casual 😊

Besides that, I have worked quite a bit on the AI behaviour for this update and will also continue to do so in for future updates.

- The character selection screen needs definitely an overhaul! I don't know if I can fit all (present &  future) characters on one screen though. That's why I added pages. However, I think it might get better (especially for 2 players), when both can 'lock' their selection with the use-key instead of just not moving anymore. 🤔

- I already noticed that the position label will tell you that you're last right before you pass the finish line. I'll have to investigate that further but it should not affect your actual placement when you finish very close before an opponent. 😉👍

- I have also tweaked the chair behaviours and balanced them so that it's also possible to win against the Home Racer when you choose The Boss! However, the chairs are much more responsive when they have a higher acceleration: The Ninja and McFly are easy to maneuver, while the standard desk chair and Turbo Toilet are a little less responsive and the Home Racer and The Boss are the hardest to control.

Thx again for playing! It was fun watching you two discover the improved bumping mechanics! And yes, please use it to your advantage! Experiment with it 😉

I reviewed the code today and fixed at least the part where it gets back to windowed when you return to the title! (Along with a few other bugs) ✌️

I removed the overlay because it interfered with the fullscreen option 😅 you can also press F12 or 0 (zero) to toggle it on or off.

This clicker game provides fun for quite some time!

The skins and updates can all be unlocked by playing it and there are global online ladders to compete against all Android/iOS players! (Although the top spot on the Android ladder is impossible to reach! This guy must have left his phone open on Auto-click for a whole day or so 😅)

The "grab a chair" part is primarily there to make you aware that you can also leave the chair and run around without (there are some Easter eggs that you can activate on each track). It should also be a funny little "rumble for the chairs" before the actual race starts 😉

And no, you get the chair you choose before the race. That's why you see all chairs shuffling through when there's no one sitting on them. 

And I got a question regarding the window mode: how did you set the full screen? Through the bottom right overlay button (when playing the browser version) or the in-game button in the title menu? I will have a look into that. Thx for making me aware of this bug.

Yes, the new cover art has been added as one of the last things before release and I agree that it needs some adjustment - and probably also the UI layout. As the internal resolution is just 320x180 it's a little challenging though to shrink the buttons, without looking fractured. I see what I can do 😉

There is already a sound volume option directly on the title screen: you can see "volume:" and a left & right arrow to change the volume from 0 to 100% in 10%-steps above the "Full screen" option and the animations showing the controls.... 

Maybe I will also add volume options to the pause menu with one of the next updates 🤔

Yes, a mini map is still on the agenda but wasn't a priority until now. I wanted to get the racing mode working first and until then display the direction indicators - I also added the new "wrong direction" indicator which shows you that you're going in the wrong direction during a race. I will add them for the time attack mode as well! 

More changes and new features are planned for the future and your feedback helped shaping them 😉👍

Well, I was already aware of some "invisible" enemies in the tutorial but now I checked and also encountered the "invisible & undefeatable" enemy type 😐

Did you try to push the spawn button several times? You just need to kill 1 enemy in the tutorial to be able to advance...

Hahaha 😈 it's so much fun watching others to get away from a fight with only 1 heart left - just to die because they stepped on a spike trap shortly after 😂

However, I already nerfed them. Originally, they were active the whole time while the player was around, not only once per second 😉

There is a huge secret area in Central Rye and occasionally 1-2 secret areas in each level of The Forlorn Caves. You'll see a message when you find one...

If you pet the dog a few times in a row, the necromancer will give you discounts (yes, more than one 😉) on the revive costs 😇

Yeah, I tweaked the attack/combat part until it felt good - at last, it's a Hack'n'Slash, so combat must feel good, right?😉

And the freezing bug is now what gone 💪😤

And yes, hits are supposed to hurt 😈 but you can also find hearts in the wild 😉

Also, there is a pretty big secret area in Central Rye... With lots of enemies and breakable objects 😏... The entrance is well-hidden but yet easy to spot, if you know where to look 🕵️

I just fixed the "attack with mouse not working" bug with version 0.6.1.6 - I think it was the same in the other levels, except in the Goblin King's Throne Room... 

What was your highest combo? Did you find any secret areas? Could you get to the Minotaur and defeat him? Did you get to the Forlorn Caves?

FYI: The "freeze" but should be fixed now with version 0.6.1.6 🙂

And thx for the bug report, too! I also randomly stumbled over the "freeze" bug - and always when I was spamming the "attack" button - but I couldn't figure it out yet.

However, I think I found the root cause now and can possibly fix it in the next update. 👍

Apart from the occasional freezes, was there anything else that wasn't well with the controls?

How far did you get in the game? Did you find and kill the Minotaur? Could you even get to the Goblin King? 😏 Have you found any secret areas?

I'm trying to answer your questions now 😉

The "Wheel Shield'" power up protects you from the carpets' & puddles' effects.

The energy, shown by the blue energy bar at the bottom, is like your stamina that depletes when you move. It doesn't deplete fast on easy difficulty but has more influence on normal and hard difficulty modes! You get a slow down when it's down to 0 until you can refill it.

There will be more power ups soon which you then can activate through another button!

So, what's with getting off the chairs? I have added some intractable objects across the tracks, like the pool you can swim in, the fast food restaurant where you can order food or the couch where you can accompany a sad person... You can use them when getting off the chair and most will give you back energy. One of the upcoming power ups can throw you or your opponents respectively off the chair, too... I'll add more reasons to get off the chair in future updates.

I know that there are still some UI bugs with controllers and will target them with the next updates 👍

I want to reply to the points you've criticized:

• Can't catch up to opponents: I'm aware that it's really hard to catch up to opponents right now and am already thinking about ways to make this easier. One thing that will be added to address it will be pick ups you can use to swipe the opponent to the side (broom) and you'll be able to place oil puddles with the salad oil pick up (will work similar to the bananas in Mario kart). Another thing will be a "wind shadow" that will give you a small speed boost when you're directly behind an opponent for a short time. There are also thoughts about "traps" that can throw you off a chair, like this jump scare monster:

However, I don't want to punish players that are good by making the race (much) easier for the others. That's why there's also no rubber banding 😉

• UI: I must admit that I'm not very good at UI and here, most of it grew organically as the game grew. Thanks for pointing out these things. At some point I'll really have to redesign and reorganize the UI for a better experience and your feedback will be very helpful! 👍

I'm happy that you've enjoyed the other parts of the game. And yes, I'm currently working on a big content update with more chairs to choose from, the 5th track (maybe also a 6th "tutorial" track), a new secret character and (if I'll manage to get it running) an actual race mode! 😉

In fact, I'm planning on adding customizable controls with one of the next versions. I've chosen the arrow keys for player 1 because of the people that have an AZERTY-layout keyboard, so most can at least play alone. However, it's also playable with a controller - for both players, each one can use a controller 😉

And there will also be a tutorial level which shows & explains everything.

I'm so bad at Sonic (and apparently sonic-like) games x') - didn't make it through level 1...

But the graphics and sound was really good!

Very well-made - and Alex-like: random levels and the urge to get as far as possible! Can't wait to beat Tommy and Ibzy when it gets released on Google play :D

Gets hard after the 5th or 6th wave - also didn't make it much further xD
